MS PRO 8 Freezes After Importing Files Totalling About 46 mi

Post by Gary Ivan »

I am attempting to edit clips taken with my Sony DCR-SR100 video camera. I tried 2 computers and find that the MS PRO 8 program freezes after I import files totaling about 45:57 (almost 46 minutes). The number of files does not seem to make any difference. After the files total approximately the maximum time of 45:57, MS PRO 8 freezes and I am forced to END TASK using DEVICE MANAGER.

Info: Win XP Pro/ 2G RAM / 200G + free space / NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT/GTO.

Thanks,

Gary

Sounds like you have your temp files defaulting to your C: drive with inadequate free space there, as a first guess.

If you read the second Announcement at the top of the MSP board and acted on it, we might have a better idea what may be going on.

Thanks, Dev:

Im not at all used to the forums and appreciate your guidance. I've completed the info as you indicated.

I have the video files from my camcorder stored on a separate drive (D:) with over 200 Gb free. My C: drive is a separate 500 GB physical drive with about 300 GB free.

Your further thoughts are very welcomed.

Thank you,

Gary

Sorry, cannot really help you further, as I'm not into MPEG editing. My earlier post was just a gut reaction to a common cause of limiting. With the compression you are probably using, the problem seems to come in at just a few Gb (3 or 4). I have had projects where I had 50 Gb open (4 DV tapes), so I don't think there is an inherent limitation in MSP.

Perhaps if you answer the questions in blue in the link I told you about, in full detail, someone with experience in MPEG editing may be able to help you. However, there is one specific question that requires an answer: how have you set up the Virtual Memory?

And what file system are you using? NTFS or FAT32?

Is it the same imported file which causes this every time or different ones?

Dammit, why didn't I think of that? Of course that sound right. 4 Gb and all! :(

We can't all think along the same lines all the time, can we? :)

I still think that the problem has more to do with a corrupt file, maybe several even, than file system or swap file location. Isn't it is odd that it seems to stop responding at the same point in time on two machines? That fact alone would point to other causes than swap file or HDD space.

6mbps video + 224kbps audio would crash a 2GB (codec?) limitation in almost exactly 45:57

Thanks for the follow-on thoughts. File system is NTFS. The freezing problem occurrs on both computers and also with any combination of any files. The files all play fine idividually.

Thanks for the continuing thougts and suggestions.

Just because an mpeg file plays fine in a media player on its own does have no meaning in the context of editing that file. Most media players can compensate for file errors and play these files, editing these files is a totally different kettle of fish.

Having said that, I'm stumped with this problem and tend to agree with Gorf now that we may be having a decoder limitation causing you grief.

Dear Heinz-Oz et al:

I spent a lot more time trouble shooting MS8 last night. It was very late so I have more investigations because of my curiosity. I have learned that there is one strange file out of about 75 files. This is a 30 meg file that works perfect in Windows Media Player (Vista and XP) and also works perfect in Windows Movie Maker (Vista). However, when I place this file on the time line in MS8, the program freezes. I finally isolated this file and removed it. Now, it seems that I can place even 5 hours of files into MS8 without any problem. I think I was too hasty in my incorrect conclusion that it was related to the time (46 minutes). This bad file occurs after 46 minutes in the series. I can place this file in MS8 by itself (only) and it freezes. Again, it is strange that it works fine in other places.

I have not had a chance to download the file again from my camera to find out if the file is corrupted on the camera or if it became corrupted during the download to my computer. I will check this because I am curious.

Thank you very much for your thoughts and guidance.

Cordially,

Gary

You are more than welcome, after all, we learn from such experiences also

If you can spare the time, I would load this file into MSP on its own and let MSP chew on it for a while. We have learned over the years that, sometimes, a program might look frozen but, if you let it be for a while, might come good.

i have experienced this before with an MPEG file. There was something 'not quite right' inside the file and MSP8 would just crash each time I tried to import it. If you really need it, you could try to convert it to an AVI or something.

Thanks

The kind words from both Heinz-Oz and Troppo are greatly appreciated from this novice. I wish I lived closer to you guys!

At the risk of sounding really stupid, may I ask what an MSP is?

Sorry about that, MSP is the usually used acronym for Media Studio Pro
