Can I capture from a Sony DCR HC47 using Video Studio 11+

Post by JohnWB »

As a newbie to Camcorders, can I capture direct from a Sony DCR HC47 to my PC, via Firewire, using Video Studio 11+ rather than using the supplied Sony Picture Motion Browser that was supplied. Also should I capture using DV type 1 or DV type 2 option & what are the merits of each type

Yes you can, select DV Type 1.
DV Type 1 because VS, historically, just likes it that way. No further technical dissertation needed.

Type 1 is Uleads preffered type, although it is not "universal"
Type 2 is the default used by Microsft and recognized in most applications.
So if you want to use your footage in other applications, I would suggest you use the "universal" type 2.

But as a footnote to the last post, you need to be aware that many (and I mean many) users have found that their computers are not necessarily up to the job of capturing Type 2 DV. The reason is not absolutely clear, though computer resources are an obvious (though not exclusive, it seems) element. People in this situation find that when trying to capture using Type 2 Encoder, their captured video and/or audio is jerky and essentially unwatchable. Switching to Type 1 usually remedies this.

And believe me, Type 1 DV will still happily play in Microsoft systems, you can export it back to your mini DV camera in edited form, and it is immediately accepted and will play, and of course you can just as happily convert it to other formats, including DVD compatible mpeg-2.

As a further footnote, in answer to the original poster, Type 2 captures the video and audio as separate streams though in a single file. Type 1 captures them as a single stream. But to all intents and purposes, the quality of both is equal.
