Lots of Free Stuff

Post by dbz2000 »

Not sure if all of these items are listed in the "Free Stuff" section of the forum; but I thought this was worth a look-see. If they are already there, forgive the redundancy and just ignore this post. Hope you find things helpful and useful here: :D

Yes, thank you. Looks like some potentially interesting stuff there. I have separately bookmarked the page!

Doesn't look like it's free.

Sorry if I misled you with the term "free"; however, I should have said reasonably priced stuff with unlimited "free" upgrades. I guess the old saying that very few things in life are free - but some are reasonable applies here. I still think the site could prove to be useful in some respects.

I am a little confused, since all of the programs on that page say 'Free Download"... even when you click on one of the download buttons, that is repeated.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I have made further enquiries and downloaded one file at random to see what was involved.
As a result I have removed it from the links to FREE stuff but have reposted it with some further explanation of what is involved here:

Steve:
You're welcome.

Ken:
I was fooled also.

There's a big difference between free download and free usage.

The download is free, the license will cost you.

Yes, I see what you mean. I downloaded one of the files, and in fact it installed three of the listed programs, then told me they were all evaluation copies. I uninstalled them but there was junk left all over the place.

The AVS DVD/video player is free, and it would appear that this is their only free product.

AVS media seems to have two websites :? (I think maybe AVS4YOU is an "affiliate" reseller, although both give the same London address in the contact info.) This website is more clear about the pricing: http://www.avsmedia.com

My apologies once again to the forum. I came across this site through PC Magazine and when I saw the codec installer, it made me think of this forum and the many people who have codec issues.

However, I should have researched the site further and more thoroughly before posting it here. An honest mistake that carries a lesson for me for furthre posts. No ill intent was intended. :(

Thanks!

No worries, it just meant I had to post it in the link to stuff that requires payment as opposed to the stuff that is free.
Still seems a useful site.

Hey Steve, here's another site with VideoStudio-compatible video and audio plug-ins that I found in an old issue of Videomaker magazine. Some interesting stuff.

Use system restore!

Although by default I have Windows "system restore" turned off, since I consider it to be a resource hog, it is useful to turn it on and create a restore point prior to installing anything remotely "dodgy". Then you don't end up with junk and unnecessary registry entries.
