clip splits show clip time but run full vidoe when played

We are having trouble with the split video clips function. When a MPEG2 file is split using the slpit function it is divided into multiple clips just fine. Each clip is displayed in the library. When clips are added to the timeline, each shows the correct run time. When either the clip or timeline is played, the clips all run the full lenght of the original video file. What is happening here?
