Dvd size!

Hello I want to create a DVD with a loth of pictures the pictures itself are together a size of 819MB the photo's are in 18 different slideshows.

when I don't even add anything else then the photo's the total DVD size says 6.3 Gigabyte, that's a loth for 819MB photo's. Can anyone tell me why this happens?
