Thread title conflicts with discussion.
If you have the model number of the burner, you can probably find the specs on the Web. (If you know how to get to device manager on your particular version of Windows, it should tell you the model number.)samsung - is there anyway of checking
Any "modern" DVD burner should be able to burn +R and -R. They still sell CD burners and "combo" drives that play DVDs, but can only burn CDs. And, they still sell burners that can't burn dual-layer DVDs.
Problems with -R or +R are much more common with stand-alone players. Computer drives are generally more universal.
Some burners do sometimes have trouble with a particular brand of DVD, or a particualar batch of DVDs.

DMF 5 DOES recognize DVD+R discs
The thread title ("DMF 5 doesnot recongnize DVD-R discs") is totally wrong (and I'm not talking about the misspelling and the confusion between +R and -R).
I've used Verbatim DVD-R and DVD+R discs with MF5 for years with no problems whatsoever. The fault, as other contributors have indicated, is likely to lie with the hardware.
