Is it possible to tell VideoStudio to use a 3rd party decoder, like CoreAVC?

Yes it is, however I'm not sure if that paricular codec is compatible.

To use another codec, go to Share>Create Video File, select Custom. Then in the Save As dialog window, press the Option button. NOTE, you may have to choose AVI as the file type to access the codec.

In the Options Dialog window choose the AVI tab. Then from the drop-down menu beside Compression select your codec.

Going a bit deeper if you wish to use another compatible codec on a regular basis then you can create a template with
Tools | Make Movie Manager.
