I have a Sanyo Xacti VPC-C40 camera which records MPEG-4 movies. It came bundled with Ulead DVD MovieFactory 4.0 SE (MPEG-4) for editing and burning DVDs.
However, I am having problems with creating a DVD with this software on my brand new Toshiba laptop which is running Windows Vista Home Premium.
After I finish importing and the editing the video and proceed to burning a DVD, the software does not recognize the DVD writer drive on my laptop. When I try creating a VIDEO_TS folder or an ISO image the application hangs-up during the video multiplexing process (last step).
I also have a Ulead DVD MovieFactory 5.1 SE software which came bundled with the laptop, but it does not recognize the MPEG-4 format files when I try to add it to my project.
Is there a patch which will make the "4.0 SE version" work with Vista?
Alternatively, is there a plugin available for the "5.1 SE version" to make it recognize MPEG-4 movies?
Currently, I have two versions of Ulead DVD MovieFactory each of which have a different problem. If I can get one of them to work on my PC it would be great!
Can anyone please help.
DVD MovieFactory problems under Vista
I have seen a number of postings on this forum related to DVDMF issues with burning/finishing a DVD.
The key issues/questions I have are:
- Does Ulead DVD MovieFactory 4.0 SE (MPEG-4), which came bundled with my Sanyo Xacti VPC-C40 camera, work in Windows Vista?
- Currently, it hangs-up on the last step while multiplexing the video files.
- The laptop came bundled with DVDMF 5.1x SE, which desnot recognize MP4 files from this camera.
- Is there a patch or plugin that will allow it to import MP4 files?
- Is there a problem/conflict if I have two versions (4.0 SE and 5.1x SE) installed on the same laptop?
I would appreciate any insight you may have.

First off... MPEG-4 can be trouble. The more compressed the format, the more likely you are to have trouble editing it or converting it to DVD. The only foolproof format seems to be AVI/DV (13GB per hour) from a MiniDV camcorder.
MF4 as not designed to work with Vista.
MF5 was current when Vista was released. There was a Vista patch.
MF6 has always worked with Vista.
I don't have the specs for MF5, but the specs for MF6 don't actually say it supports "MPEG-4" or "MP4"... It does say it supports DivX, Xvid, and MOV, which are MPEG-4 variations, but it does NOT support every variation of these formats... Many users of these formats seem to have lots of trouble.

If you feed Movie Factory a DVD-compatible MPEG-2 file, you shouldn't have any trouble converting/burning it to DVD.
However, if you want to edit the file, MPEG-2 can sometimes be trouble too.
(Not everybody has trouble editing MPEG-2... It seems to depend on the particular file.) If that happens to you, you may need to get a special-purpose MPEG editor, or, a tool to convert your file to AVI/DV, or look for a completely different set of software tools.

There is not a patch specifically for MPEG-4. The updates for MF5 are Here. I don't know if you can apply the updates to the "free" SE version.- The laptop came bundled with DVDMF 5.1x SE, which [doesn't] recognize MP4 files from this camera.

The key issues/questions I have are:
1 - Does Ulead DVD MovieFactory 4.0 SE (MPEG-4), which came bundled with my Sanyo Xacti VPC-C40 camera, work in Windows Vista?
No, MF4 is not Vista compatible, mpeg-4 is not technically supported under Vista , you have to use windows XP
2 - Currently, it hangs-up on the last step while multiplexing the video files.
What are your source videos? The multiplexing stage is when creating an image of the dvd on your harddisk, the only thing I'm aware that could cause this is low disk space, low temp space, an invalid working directory or corrupted source videos
3 - The laptop came bundled with DVDMF 5.1x SE, which does not recognize MP4 files from this camera.
Any version of MF with an SE is a 'Special Edition". MF4SE is the only version that supplies the special codec for that camera.
4 - Is there a patch or plugin that will allow it to import MP4 files?
I'm suprised that Sanyo doesn't supply a codec that installs and registers itself with the windows XP system. The codec lies in one of the MF4SE program files installation directory structure. It's possible you may be able to copy this file to another MF installation & MF can use it. I don't know with that codec though, but I have done this before. You would have to look in the plug-ins or VIO directory. But in Vista this is a problem because that mpeg4 codec requires directshow filter that Microsoft dropped support for in Vista, Microsoft wants the WMV format to be used, which happens to work great under Direct X 10
5 - Is there a problem/conflict if I have two versions (4.0 SE and 5.1x SE) installed on the same laptop?
That would have to be tested, I can't answer that except try it
I would appreciate any insight you may have.
I think it may have been a mistake to install MF4SE on Vista since it's not Vista Certified. MS really tightened the code for Vista to force program writers to write better code (that's my understanding of it)
I have a question for you, doesn't Sanyo supply any other software, codec's or assistance for this product. It seems funny that only MF would be able to work with this camera. I would think it would be nice to be able to use any video editing program with that cam as long as Sanyo wrote a codec for the windows system that can be installed and shareable/accessible to the media layer of the OS for all programs to use.
The MF4SE program that can work with the video files uses a special codec, that special codec can only be seen by MF. It's not written to be shared with the windows OS system. Maybe look on the Sanyo website & see it they supply some sort of codec for this cam.
Also if this helps you, the term MP4 is a container format used to transport (inside of the mp4 file) the real video & audio streams. The mpeg4 container can contain many codecs inside of the container. So when you see a mp4 file it could be H264/mpeg4/avc/

Have you tried Nero 7 Ultra Edition to read these files running Nero Vision? Worth a try, Nero does support Mpeg-4 HighDefinition framesizes (Nero Digital & Nero AVC)
Hope this helps
