Error during Convert in VideoStudio8, Help Me?

Post by aaronshort »

Im having a real problem when converting my projects to burn to DVD. It will get about 3/4 of the way through (drops at 82%) and then that wonderful XP message pops up saying it has to close. I checked the error report and its saying that the file "dvsf.ax" is what caused the glitch.

If anyone has experienced similar problems or know of a way of getting round it then any help would be hugely appreciated as my 120gb HD is running with about 12gb to spare because of 7 years of family videos sitting waiting on my computer.

THANKS!

Aaron,
There is a clue in your use of the word "Convert". If you are "Converting Videos" while trying to burn a DVD you are making a serious procedural mistake. You have to make a Video file of your project before burning. Read the Recommended Procedure in the top post.

Moreover, if you have only 12 GB of free space on your HD, you could also be in trouble because VS needs lots of (unfragmented) space. Can you offload some of your files onto DVDs or uninstall some large programs? I would feel a lot better if you had > 20 GB free.

Also, V8.00 had a memory leak bug that could cause it to crash while converting videos -- that was fixed in the V8.01 patch. If you haven't applied that yet, download it before doing anything else.

The procedure i am taking to burn the dvds is clicking on the share tab and going create disc. Its in their that i add in all my VS projects and make a DVD menu then let it go making the DVD folders on my computer.

Without all the temp convert files on their I have about 30gig left, its when it freezes up im stuck with only 12gig left.

I've had the patch running on it for a while but it never seemed resolve the problem.

Thanks for all the help, let me know if you can think of anything else.

Aaron,
Are you following the Recommended Procedure or not?
If you are "Adding Projects" after "Create Disk" you are headed for trouble.

Aaron, how much RAM is in your system, and how much is free before you start UVS / when it crashes? Task Manager will tell you.

okeydokey, my system is a P4 2.8Ghz with 512MB DDR Ram. Its got 388mb phys memory free before VS opening, and 326mb after.

I have all my video files in different VS projects, and go to Create Disc, then Add VideoStudio Projects to put them all onto my DVD template im creating. Theres nothing wrong with doing that is there? Or do I really have to turn my projects into video files first? I cant see this being the case because why would they have the option to just insert the VS project instead...?

Thanks for your help guys.

It's there, and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The recommendation to render first and use that file as the sole input source is based on first-hand experience of forum members. As usual, YMMV.

Hi,
Mr. Hunter told you the correct method. The reason for this is the
authoring module you are going directly into after "Share" is actually
a seperate interface. Doesn't always work well.

Load in your first project into VS8.
Goto "Share > Create video file".
Create your Mpeg2 file (the video you worked on).
Name the file so you can remeber it because you will load it in
later. Make positively sure you are creating a "DVD Compliant" video file.

After the file is created start a new project and do the same for the
next video you worked on.
Do this for all the videos one at a time.

At this point the videos will be on the harddisk in mpg format.
Hopefully you created them as dvd compliant files (read the opening
post at the TOP of the forum as warner said). Just don't install the
updates unless your having problems.

After your video files are on the harddisk start a new session of VS8
and go directly to "Share -> Create Disk".
In the Create Disk module you "Import" the dvd compliant videos that
you created on the harddisk
into the timeline. Then create chapters,
a menu system and burn the video.
Don't forget to "Save".

Hope this helps,

MD
