Importing and viewing AVCHD files in VS11 Plus

Post by imschris »

I have recently moved into High Definition, and have bought a Sony SR1 30GB HDD camcorder, that uses AVCHD compression system.
My computers include a laptop with Core2 Duo, 2 GHz processor ith 2 GB of RAM, and a NVIDEA GEFORCE GO 7300 video card, 120GB HDD.
On following the instructions of importing AVCHD files, shown below

"1. Launch VideoStudio 11.
2. Connect your camera to your computer via USB or Firewire cable, or insert your memory card in your card reader.
3. Once connected and recognized by your system, the camera will appear as a removable drive/mass storage device connected to your system, as will the card.
4. Select the Capture Tab in VideoStudio 11 and click on "Import DVD/DVD-VR"
5. In the "Select a DVD Title" Dialog box, press "Import DVD Folder..."
6. Browse to the removable drive that represents your camera or card,
7. Press the "+" symbol to display the subfolders, and select the "AVCHD" folder.
8. The "Import DVD" Screen will appear, select the clips to import by clicking in the check-box beside each clip number.
9. After the videos have been selected for import, press the import button at the bottom of this window.
Note : Depending on your system and the amount/size of the videos, step 9 can take a significant amount of time.
Your videos will now appear in your library in the top right-hand corner of your VideoStudio Editor interface, under the Video section of the drop-down menu. You can now drag these videos into your timeline or storyboards in the bottom half of the interface to continue with your video production."

When I reach step 8 no individual clips are shown, and when I click the AVCHD folder, VS11 promptly closes down.
This happens also when using my desktop P4 3.2 GHz/2GB RAM, nVIDIA GeForce FX5700VE video card(256MB RAM) running WIN XP SP2.
At first I thought that it may have been a Vista incompatability with my laptop, but the same happens with XP using a different processor etc.
The above procedure relates to importing directly from the camcorder. Files already downloaded on the computer are not recognised at all.
Any ideas please.
My software is VS11 Plus version "11.0.0157.0 Plus", and was a download.
