Strange Problem With Editing with VS10plus

Post by n3vpc »

I have been working for quite some time (about 135 shows); cutting out commercials and re-burning a favorite TV program series.

Today I tried to edit a show and could not. I am making a color block of 15 seconds and applying my title over it and then into the show at the very start of the storyboard. The title will play properly but when it gets to the end and starts the video clip it will either slow down or give distorted audio. I can’t figure out what’s wrong. The program just started doing this.

I should mention that the clip in question will play properly by itself or when added to the storyboard provided that I Do Not add the title page or color page.

What have I done now and how do I correct it? Again I need to clarify that I have been using this exact same format or theme for the past 135 shows. Should I Re-load the whole program? Obviously something is amiss but what??

Help Or Advise please?

Do you mean you have used the exact same colour block and title, although maybe different wording on the title?
What are the file types in use?

Hi!

Sorry,

No the titles change as to content and number but the color block is the same. The layout or type, font size what have you stays the same only the information contained changes. Never had a problem until this morning?

What is the file type of video?

What happens if you open up an old working project and remove the video and insert the new video that doesn't work, does it now work?

type?

they are all in mpg file format.

That may or may not be part of the problem. Files are copied over via DVD/RW disk using the capture portion of the program.

As I said never had this problem before, why now?

Bill, and thanks for answering

mpg is a format designed for watching not editing and some people have problems with this.

As to why now? It could be that the mpg you are trying to edit is slightly flawed, which won't show up in a player but will in an editor.

Have you tried my suggestion?

No problem

Worked just fine as well as all other projects.

That's what I can't figure? Why now? What's different?
Am I doing something or adding something different? No on this
one.

I am still in a "Holding Pattern" so to speak. As last resort, I might re-load
the program.

I don't see you problem then.

Insert new non-working file into old project, delete all uneeded files and change words on title, sorted.

If we spend all our time worrying why windows does some things we'd not have any time to create :P

I Tried That But......................

I thought of your suggestion first but to no avail.

As soon as the time sequence leaves the title page it will
not properly play the clip.

Is this just in Preview or does it happen to the finished product?

When you said this in reponse to my asking what happened I assumed all was ok.

If after checking on Black Labs suggestion, then I would suspect a corrupt mpeg file. Re-aquire the original file and see if that helps, though the original file source may be corrupted and this one will never work unless you can change the original file sourcing.

Or you deal with it with a program like (basic) Video ReDo or (more sophisticated) Womble, which are tailor made to handle problem mpegs...

What Went Wrong?

Post by n3vpc »

Hi Everyone and Thanks for trying to help!

I tried looking at this probelm again and tried to
redefine; just exactly what was different about this particular
project that was different from all of the rest?

Only one thing I'm afraid, even at the risk of being laughed at, my
thoughts now are of saving some other "new" person that might just do
this very same thing.

Most of the members know that when you use the "capture" function to
get video from a DVD disk, those files will then go into your 10.0
folder and will look something like this: uvs071015_213448~0. They
will, of course, have a mpg file extension in most cases.

Now before starting this project I thought to myself how much easier
it would be for me if I changed this format to say #123. Yes, that's
right. I made the file names the actual show numbers! Result Kayos
all around. Now while it may be true that you can in fact change the
mpg file names, I can tell anyone that this is not the right way to do it
and VS10 plus does not like it much. You will not be able to use
any "transition" features or title pages properly. In short, nothing
will work right that you are trying to attach to these video files.

It will play the file and it may be edited to some extent but your
audio will ripple or jump or just bog down as I described. Yet if
you use something like Windows Media Player to play these files they
will play and sound perfectly normal.

The Cure? I reloaded or should I say re-captured the files from the
original DVD/RW used for the transfer and I KEPT MY HANDS OFF THE
FILE NAMES, opened up said files inside the program and did what
editing I wished to do and completed the project. All's right with
the world!

Thanks Again,

Bill

Thank you as well -- although it only confirms a prejudice that many of us on this board have about VS. I started using it with VS7 about 5 years or more ago. And the my single greatest hate about the program to this day -- though obviously not enough to stop me using it -- it is the naming process. Most of use hate the seemingly meaningless (though internally coherent, according to date) sequence of the VS names. I particularly hate the fact that most other video editing programs allow you assign names of your own devising even from the capture stage. But despite my, and many other users', complaints nothing has every occurred to change the situation.

Resolution: as you discovered -- leave it alone!!
