AND, if you had read the link, you would have known that we need to know more from you. You haven't told us the source of your avi files or the codec used to make them. You haven't told us your project settings. Etc.
Are we supposed to just guess what you are doing?

oop after sp3
ANY avi file, regardless of the source. AVI files captured from video tape by MSP7 Video Capture; avi files from web; any and all avi files regardless of source. Have tried many avi files from many sources. Project setting is DV NTSC 29.97 48KHz.

So this is the same for mpeg1.avi, mpeg2.avi, mpeg4.avi, mjpeg.avi, xvid.avi, divx.avi, dv.avi type 1, dv.avi type 2, mov.avi, you have tried all of these and the hundreds of other .avi files, it is exactly the same?
Do you realise that avi is just a container which holds a multitude of file types.
It is not the avi part which is imortant, it is the bit that preceedes it that we need to know.

reconfirm exact nature of problem
And, to reconfirm, the lack of sync is in the preview window when file added to timeline. The souce window is OK (i.e. in sync) but that of course doesn't show what your actual editing has accomplished.

Have used dv avi type 1 and dv avi type 2 that I have captured using video capture. Don't know lineage of every other avi file, i.e. all those that I have not captured, but all play properly in Windows Media Player, Real Player, etc, and none show properly in preview window, but do in source window.
OK, let me get this straight. Please check exactly each of these sentences
1. You have a NTSC mini-DV camera or an analogue> DV converter, set to NTSC.
2. With an IEEE-1394 card, you use video capture to copy the DV stream to your hard disc, with settings to MS-1394 Device Control and DV type 1, Using the Ulead DirectShow Capture Plugin. There are no dropped frames during this process.
3. You take the resultant AVI file and put it on the timeline of VideoEditor, with settings
NTSC (29.97 fps)
Video tracks 7 (figure not important)
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits 720 x 480, 4:3, 29.97 fps
Lower field first
DV Video encoder-type 1
DV Audio-NTSC 48.000 kHz, 16 bit Stereo
4. You place the cursor at 00:00:00:00
5. You click on the LH Play button of your Preview screen
6. Your sound is out of synch
????
Now for the real questions
A. Was your cam/converter set for 48 kHz or 32 kHz? If set to 32 kHz, then synch probs are certain: you MUST match the input to the settings
B. Is your Preview set for Quick, Instant or normal preview? If Quick or Instant, does it do the same with normal Preview (i.e., with an encode)?
C. What else is running on your computer when editing?

preview change worked - why?
Going to instant preview from quick worked - sorry that I didn't try that - I figured it was the same as quick. Help doesn't really explain the difference. What is the difference and why does it work on instant but not quick? Thank you for the suggestion. I would like to understand the difference.
Quick preview is without encoding and I've never used it, nor do I know even why it's there!.
Instant preview does a rapid semi-encoding (hence the brief pause before playing, while it does this. However, it is not perfect and it can easily trip up if you have complex editing.
Normal preview is the one to use for critical viewing, but it has to encode newly edited parts of the selected project properly (assuming Smart Render is on) before playback starts.
