MovieFactory vs VideoStudio

Post by webcombo »

I have been using VideoStudio since 9 and now have 10plus. I have a new Canon HV20 which is a true HD camcorder, and am wandering if MovieFactory is better than VideoStudio as far as outputting the video to HD content. I also got a new HDTV to watch my videos on. I just wanted to see if MovieFactory has the same ability when editing video as VideoStudio. I have been very happy with VideoStudio and am very familiar with their timeline and settings.

Also, I create Slideshows on the side for a business, and have been using ProShow Gold to create them. It creates fantastic quality videos, for SDTV. But now that HDTV is becoming way more popular, I am thinking about creating all my shows in the 16:9 format. (which I can do in ProShow, but the quality doesn't seem to be as great for some reason) So I am wandering with the new HD pack for MovieFactory, coupled with my high resolution digital pictures, would that create an even crisper looking slideshow video?

I just would like to get some opinions on whether you guys would think it would be worth it to buy MovieFactory with the HD pack, or upgrade my VS to 11+. Any thought on the subject would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks.

movie factory will output to HD better at present as it has already had an update. VS's update is coming very shortly, so if you plump for VS you won't have a problem in the long term.

Look at the products as
VS = a video editor with dvd making capabilities
MF = a dvd authorer with editing capabilities.

So which one to buy? If you are serious then both.

HD tv and 16.9 are two different things, so we need to find what you are doing to find the reason your slideshows are worse now.
Do you do things like resize your pictures to 16.9 format using a crop function rather than resizing the canvas? Do you resize them? What resolution are they, 16.9 SD doesn't need any different to 4.3, but HD, is 1920 x 1080i so you need higher resolution pictures in this format for best viewing, or lower if you don't have a full resolution hd set.
What burner do you have blue ray?
What player do you have?
If you only have a std dvd burtner then you can't make proper hd dvds and if you don't have a hd player this also hampers things :D

Skier-hughes, thanks for the quick reply. When you say "VS's update is coming very shortly", are you talking about VS12, or a patch for 11. Since I only have 10plus, I don't know if there will be an update for me. Or will there be? One of the things that intrigued me about the MovieFactory is that it is suppose to allow you to burn a HDDVD onto a regular DVD by giving you a 20minute HD video. Now, I don't have an HD DVD player. But I have a DVD player that has an HDMI output that goes into my second HDMI jack on my HDTV. But do you think the quality issue is that I am looking for crystal clear, HD quality slideshow, but only showing it through a standard DVD player?

As far as the slideshow specs go, I take all my photos and resize them to 1920px wide by whatever is proportionate, in Photoshop Elements. There is a batch process to do that with. My camera is a DSLR Canon Rebel XT, so it takes high resolution pictures. So I would think that would produce a very high quality slideshow. But does it all stem back to the input to the HDTV, being a SD DVD player?

Thanks for all your help!!

I would reccommend MF6+ with Patch# 2 & the HD-DVD burning pack add-on.
The HighDefinition slideshows are excellent quality. You simply need to learn more about video itself, how to use the customized features of MF (it's powerful exporting features).

With the HD-DVD burning pack you have 2 paths to use.
HD-DVD or AVCHD Disk.
HD-DVD being playable on the Toshiba HD-DVD players & AVCHD playable on Blu-Ray players that support the avchd/h264 codec. Most of the Blu-Ray players support this, Playstation 3, Sony Blu-Ray players, Pioneer etc.

To produce a great quality slideshow you create the video fielded as frame_based. This is important since the source of the video is pictures.
