Help w/Error: Unable to Access the Audio Codec Driver

Post by astrovideo »

Hi,
I am using VS10+. I get an error when trying to "Save Trimmed Video" (Edit Tab > Clip Menu > Saved Trimmed Video). The error is: Unable to Access the Audio Codec Driver.

The clip plays fine in the editor, and I know I have the corect CODEC installed (according to G-Spot). How can I remedy this? I know MPEG-4 clips are not for editing, but I just want to save a portion of the clip. Here are the clip properties:

Thank you.

Hi astro,
Well it is an Xvid file with MP3 audio so the MP3 may be the cause of the choking.
You may have to use the "Create sound file" function in the Share tab to output to a wav file then import it back into the timeline on the audio track. Then mute the original clip and output to a new clip. THEN use the new one for trimming.
Roundabout I know but the original MP3 encoder may be giving VS trouble.

Can you confirm that you have an mp3 codec on your computer, and if so, which one. Video Studio has problems with certain mp3 codecs, and the LameMP3 one in particular. That could be the source of your problem If you perhaps installed another variety of mp3 codec, that may alter things.

Lance: I tried your method, but I can't seem to cut (scissor tool) the video AND the audio track at the same time. Still working on it.

Ken: Yes I have 3 mp3 CODECs intalled. Here they are according to G-Spot:
Audio Format:
Code: 0x0055
Name: WAVE_FORMAT_MPEGLAYER3 (MP3)
Vendor: ISO/MPEG

The following codecs all claim to be capable of processing this format:

--> {Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec (advanced)}
--> {MPEG Layer-3 Decoder}
{Nero Audio Decoder 2}

Problem still persists.

Yes the Fraunhofer is the original (I think) MP3 codec. However there are others and MP3 is not a strict standard so, as Ken correctly points out, they can give VS trouble especially when they are used with another video codec. Lame tends to be the one that gives the most trouble.

What I don't understand is, VS has no problem "Accessing the Audio Codec driver" during playback, only during "Save Trimmed Video". By the way, I have 3 mp3 Codecs installed. Sure would be nice to solve this.

I really dno't know the answer to that other than to offer that there is a vast difference between playing back a file and editing a file.
The best example of this is MPEG2 files. There have been numerous instances on the forum (and personally) where an MPEG2 played fine because the software has built-in error correction for the purposes of playback. However when it came to editing the exact same file the software falls over due to hidden errors or incompatabilities.

Nero uses Lame, I understand.

Apart from the probably impossible task of tracking down exactly which codec was used by the person who made the original XVid video you are using, the only other suggestion I can make would be first to convert the XVid to DVD-compatible mpeg-2 (if you are planning on using it in a project which will eventually be burned to DVD, that is...) A number of us here use a program called SUPER for this. You might want to give it a try -- it is freeware. You will find a variety of download sites if you do a Google search for it, but one such site is http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video ... /super.cfm
