Can you install vs10 or vs11 without quicktime

Post by bowhunter »

Just wondering if quicktime and if I recall (something else) another plugin have to be installed when you load vs10 or 11. I don't use quicktime for anything else and really don't want it on my system unless its needed by videostudio.

Thanks

As far as I am aware, it is not essential to the operation of Video Studio. It is really only there for the many users who have digital still cameras that can film video and use the .mov format, or other users who acquire .mov footage from other sources.

Aloha Ken! Long time i know... Hope all is well.

Well, hate to be picky, but the OP's question was can it be installed without it? I would like to know:

1. If you don't need it can you install without it and how? It seems to always pop up a box that mentions it is installing even if you have a later version already installed. Is there are switch of some sort that would stop this or any other way to install it without dealing with QT at all?
2. If it must be installed with VS, i guess the the only way to dump it to uninstall it AFTER VS is installed?

Can anyone elaborate a bit more on this? I am really starting to detest QT. It is getting huge and full of so many language files that are a pain to remove. System is XP Pro SP2. VS version is 10+

Thank you very much for any help on this!

To directly answer the question if you can install without Q.T. (meaning keep VS from installing)... Nope, there is no option during the installation to prevent it from being installed. You can of course uninstall it. But as Steve pointed out, SmartSound Quicktracks use Q.T.

Thanks Steve - vidoman! Don't use 'em. Speaking of which, is there a thread showing how to uninstall it (SmartSound)?

Thanks again for such a blazingly fast response !

Not at my own computer right now but I would check "Add/Remove Programs" in the Windows Control Panel to see if it can be removed from there.

Which version QT?

Post by Manzano808 »

OK, I apologize for not asking this one right away. Does anyone know exactly which version of QT VS10+ installs? I think it was 7.x but i don't know what the x was. I remember, when I had QT version 6.x installed it simply updated it in the folders where i had QT 6 installed (which was nice that it didn't move it around on me). But i didn't document exactly which version it ended up as.

Thanks yet again!

More Info

In case anyone needs this, here's what i did:

1. Installed QT 6.5.2. This is so much smaller and i've never had a problem with it. We had purchased Pro many moons ago.

2. Installed VS10+ plus SP1.

We noted that it kept version the same. Didn't update like i had originally thought.

I know most recommend updating to QT7 but i dread it. I've had lots of problems with it. So i'll keep things like this (for now). Since we've purchased updates to 7.x i may just insert the newer plugins in the browsers and leave it at that.

P.S. There is an entry in Add/Remove for "SmartSound Quicktracks Plugin" but i KNOW that i saw two separate installs for this stuff - I think it was SmartSound AND Quicktracks. Aren't they separate? I know i saw 2 install secquences for this or did i imagine it?

Thanks for the help people!!

Smartsound and Quicktracks are one and the same.
What you probably saw was firstly the Smartsound Software (Program) being installed, then you saw the sample music files being installed.

My recollection of the two sequences were that the first was for Quicktracks itself, and the second was for the various tracks of music... :?:

That's what i had thought! I wonder why it didn't update this time? Perhaps it never did since i didn't ever formally check, i guess i'll have to keep guessing until i have to re-install. Which appears to be soon due to some other problems i'm having (another thread).

thanks for this vidoman!
