zenguitar,
Used MF6+ to convert some avchd footage to Standard Defintion. Came out pretty good. I also went & downloaded some user sample clips from the HG10 and they converted to SD pretty nice.
Try the setting I posted above in your version of MF, see if the program creates better video than your previous conversions.
I also viewed the MTS files directly on the HDTV. Very impressive video. The HG10 cam seems to shoot great footage.
Hope this helps.
What format to edit with?

2oolate,
That is really interesting. I copied the files over two ways, using the supplied software and manually via explorer. I did notice that the supplied software renames the files from .mts to .m2ts but it does not copy the structure, just the files.
I'll try copying the whole structure and recreating and see if that makes a difference.
etech,
Thanks for the info on the conversion specs,
What you posted is exactly the settings I was using to downconvert the .m2ts files to mpg DVD.
DVD Standard Defintiion Template
NTSC Settings: (Use 25fps for PAL)
FrameSize = 720x480
Fielding = Upper Field First
Quality = 100%
Video Bit Rate = Constant 8000kbs
Audio = Mpeg Audio, Stereo
Sampling Rate = 48khz
Data Rate = 224kbs
I felt the quality was not as good as it should be considering the originals are HD. I am seeing some motion blurring and jagged edges in the down conversion when viewed on the computer. When put to DVD disc and played back on the tv, it's even worse.
I'm going to have to try MF6+ somehow, it's common enough that one version of software can decode/encode better than another.
I'm going to pick up the HDMI cable that works with this camera tomorrow, it of course didn't come with one and it's not a standard HDMI cable. But, that's the only way I'll be able to play the .mts files themselves on the TV because I don't have an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player just yet.
I'm thinking I'll keep the camera and just accept waiting for software to catch up a little better. But in the meantime I can work on getting MF6+ software.
Thank you very much for all the help

I read you post regarding working with the HG10. I purchased the same camera recently and have VS Plus with the new patch. Seems "now" with the new patch to read the .m2ts format.
I'm one of those guys that is, as previously posted, "tech challenged and has jumped into the fire...head first.
I don't actually know which is the best cable set up to capture video from my camera into VS 11. So far I've just copied the video to my hard drive via USB cable and the software that came with the camera. In Capture Mode VS 11 doesn't even recognise my camera as being connected.
I've added the clips I've transferred to my hard drive into my library and playback of the "clips" seems fine but playback of the "Project is way jerky. I just sent in a post asking for help with this then came upon your post.

I suspect that the version of MF5.6+ that is distributed with the HG10 has similar problems as the original release of MF6+ (before MF6+ patches).
To the users of the Canon HG10 avchd/h264 high definition video cam there are updates for the software via the following links:
