I hope that someone can help. Whenever I try to capture video in DV format (supposedly the best way..?) from my Sony DCR-TRV33E, I get an error:
"Capturing failed. The file created is corrupted and unusable. It will be automatically deleted".
I've used the same camcorder and PC with Windows MM and have had no problems there. Has anyone any ideas why I'm getting this error message? Thanks. Pete
Do you have the camera connected to the computer via firewire cable? That is really the only way of capturing DV... If you are using a USB connection, then at most you will only be able to capture low quality streaming video.
thanks for getting back to me. Yes, I am connected via firewire. If I choose anything other than DV as the capture mode, such as MPEG or DVD, it appears to work. I'm wondering if I can feel a re-install coming on.....
Any more thoughts, anyone? A colleague who uses several video editing packages suspects it's down to compression, or lack of it. My program will not import from my camcorder in DV format. However, it will import the same file from the same camcorder in DVD or MPEG format. He thinks that as it won't import in DV (which is uncompressed) but will import in DVD or MPEG (which is compressed), that is where the problem lies. I'd be very surprised if I were the only person to encounter it.
I'd really appreciate any further thoughts anyone may have as I'm keen to clear this problem up.
If your camera is a mini DV variety, and if you are connecting via Firewire, then I am afraid you are pretty much isolated in not being able to capture. Firewire and DV go together, as the French say, "comme cul et chemise" -- they are made for each other, quite literally.
And your friend is wrong. DV is in fact compressed -- five times more compressed than raw .avi video. The latter gives 65 GB for 1 hour of video while DV gives 13 GB per hour.
Though it is highly unlikely, the only other thing I can think of would be to check which version of DV encoder type you are using. Normally, Type 2 Encoder is set by default, even though this is the one which causes most users problems. In the Options icon on the capture page, with DV selected as the capture format, check which Type is set, and if it is Type 2, change it to 1 and see what happens. However, as I say, it is unlikely to be the culprit since type 2 will usually still allow a capture, only it will be jerky and unusable...
In addition to Ken's sound advice, and from personal experience, you may want to shut down any unnecessary programs running in the background. Anything in the system tray like anti-virus programs, screen savers or even go into the services screen (Ctrl/Alt/Del) and shut down anything not needed there. Also you have not filled in your system details but remember that you will need 13 gig approximately for each hour of tape. Windows, via VS, will be slapping that data down all over the place to keep up with the transfer rate so a well defraged hard drive with plenty of real estate (contiguous) is essential.
Failing all that google for a free utility called WinDV. It is a purpose built capture program and if it can't capture then nothing can!
I get exactly the same message, I am capturing via firewire using VS10+,strange thing is that the actual file is captured fine and is fully useable and editable so I just ignore it.
Guys - problem solved!!! No matter what message I was seeing, the video was being captured and not deleted.
Ken - thanks for your input and correcting our flawed thinking.
Lancecarr - thanks. We all can only benefit from good housekeeping.
Sjj1805 - thanks for the link, very interesting reading.
Roadgiant - yours was the post that solved it all. I found numerous copies of the captured file that the program had reported it was deleting due to corruption. I'd been tearing out what little hair I have left for ages. Now I can get started on the box full of mini DV tapes that I have to edit.
Thanks again to all for sharing your knowledge and experiences with me. Best regards.
Pete
