Info on cutting film and music together

Post by Rowena »

I'm looking at buying a new editing software and considering Ulead11.

I would like to know is there software or a version of ulead, that allows the following:

Say I have cut my scenes and added music in various places. If I then go back and take a bit more film out, my old ulead (v6) creates a complete mess and the music I had so carefully place thereafter also then has to be changed piece by piece to match where it was previously. Isn't it possible that the music is automatically altered to keep the rest in the correct place?

Thanks, Rowena. I've just had a baby and can't wait to get editing again!

Yes -- the feature you are describing is called Ripple Editing (i.e. you make an edit and the effect ripples on to the rest of the project). It was introduced I think in VS10 (though it might have been earlier, with VS9... can't quite recall. But it is definitely there now! )

Rowena... as mentioned this is called Ripple Editing.

It takes a little getting used to so do play around with it first if you choose to go with Ulead11+

(get the plus version)

I'm having a great time with my VS11+ and have hardly had any problems with it.

Thanks for the replies. Was just off to bed, but thought I'd have a quick look in.

Do I NEED to get the PLUS version for the ripple editing? Or is the plus version much better for other reasons? I was under the impression it was for more varied output functions.

Rowena.

The Plus version has more overlay tracks....that alone was worth it for me.

Well the last four posts have confused me - but then I am easily confused :? .

So, unless anyone persuades me towards the +, I'll be purchasing V11 tonight.

Thanks, Rowena.

Rowena, if you are not worried about the little extra cost of the + version then get it. Ripple editing comes with both versions but the plus has a few extra features...one of which is extra overlay tracks.

Thanks Clevo. How many overlay tracks does the non + version have? I'm not sure I would use the function much, although maybe I should experiment a bit. I've only ever added music and transition effects.

What's your main use for them? Rowena.

If you think you will creat multi-image/video montages then having several overlay tracks just makes things easier. But you can achieve the same effect with one overlay track by creatinga video file, put back on timeline, adding the next layer, creating a video file, put back on timeline, add another layer. Would require more planning but you can get away with it.

If you're only adding simple overlays and music than the regular version VS11 would suffice and you can be just as creative.

For me it was just $20 more and I didn;t want to feel like I was left out of anything

You also need to take into the account the very real possibility that in a very short time, like a lot of us, you will become hooked on editing. And as you quickly become used to the processes involved, you become more proficient and start to look for the extras that make a project look that much more 'professional'. With the non+ version, you won't have any scope for that...
