Looking for a program to make the DVD case inserts

Post by ozzy667 »

Now that I've got a loose grip on making DVDs from my DV movies, can anyone suggest a decent (ie cheap or free) program for making DVD covers for the plastic boxes?

I use PI, not free though. MS Publisher can also do it but is not for free either. Whether or not the free IrfanView can do it, I don't know.

I have and like Acoustica CD/DVD Label Maker 3.14
Free try before you buy http://www.acoustica.com/cd-label-maker/
Only $21.95 after that.

I simply measured up a case and made a template in Corel Draw. But you could do the same with any graphics package you already have and in that sense it would be free...

I print the labels on light white cardboard (190 g/sq.m) and found I had a steady enough hand with a sharp pair of scissors to cut it all out once printed -- though I have now bought a guillotine for the job.

That's what i do too. Except I use a stanley knife with a metal ruler on a rubber mat.

For printing on the disc itself I use the software that came with my Epson printer, called Epson Print CD.

For the case inserts I also made my own template, in MS Word.

Try this one, a simple search on the internet usually does the trick:

I've been toying with the Acoustica one for a bit - seems pretty decent but it wants 8.5" x 14" paper for the insert. I haven't had any luck finding any thick or glossy paper in this size though.

What size paper are you folks using?

Picked up some decent 8.5 x 11 'cover stock' today - hoping to find a setting to change the paper size in the program.

Curiosity got the better of me .........and just downloaded the trial.
After using the wizard you are presented with four tabs, disc, cover, inserts etc. If you click on the cover tab there is a drop down box at the bottom which sets the paper size which for some crazy reason defaulted to "legal", just change the paper to "A4"

Wow - I spent almost an hour checking stores today for thick 8.5 x 14 paper!

I can't believe I missed that button...

I'm liking to program aside from some issues with printing DVD labels - but that seems to be a problem with my printer (no matter how many calibration sheets I print and setting I change).

When the trial runs out there's a button for 'two more days please' and it extends it for two more days. Thought that was kind of funny.

I'll likely end up buying the program when the trial runs out.

Not sure what kind of case you are using, but I use this one: https://www.shop4tech.com/item2903.html

Basically the same size as a jewel case, but it is not a rigid plastic like a jewel case, so it won't crack or break. It's also black, which is recommended for storage. It also has a clear plastic sleeve on the outside that holds the DVD cover insert. You do have to use 8.5 x 14 paper, though, because it is slightly longer thatn 11". No need for it to be glossy or thick because of the plastic sleeve.

I've been using DVD cases from the dollar store.

Breakage isn't much of a concern as they will mostly just sit on a shelf - home movies...
