PI 12 and HDR

Post by thebusch »

Why does PI 12 demand that HDR photos have different shutter speeds? Why won't mulitple images saved with different EV settings during RAW conversion work?
This effectively means I am forced to shoot in bracket mode with aperture priority and a fixed ISO if I want to use the HDR function.

Because that's the way it works. If you change the aperture you also slightly change what is captured by the camera and the images won't overlay (register) properly.

Thanks, Heinz! However, in the case I mentioned where I change the effective EV during the RAW conversion, there is no problem with the overlay.

I didn't say there was but tried to explain why, in my humble opinion, the PI HDR function requires AV priority. Not many people are using RAW. I have shot most of my images in jpeg and RAW simultaneously with my Canon EOS 350D but failed thus far in getting a better result from the RAW image. Maybe if I was going to print very large format images that would change. As it stands though I only shoot RAW for special images where I expect to be doing a lot of manipulation of WB etc.

HDR with several photos created from a single RAW will work with a little trick.
You have to bluff PI by using pictures without exif data. In the german version of PI12 you can delete the exif data with 'Bearbeiten --> Duplizieren' . The duplicates have no exif. 8)
Now you can create your HDR/DRI picture as usual.

Thanks again, Heinz! I am shooting Sony and find the Sony IDC gives me enough improvement to make me shoot more and more RAW. For years I also only shot JPEG and got along very well but even this old dog is learning some new tricks.

Skeeter, thanks for that tip! I was wondering if I edited the EXIF if that would work (several programs make that easy to do). I'll try stripping the EXIF entirely.

BTW, wonder where you are over here? I'm in the Eifel.

EDIT: 12 Oct
Of course your tip works perfectly, Skeeter. Thanks!
