VS 10 Plus cannot read Mpeg2 Files

Post by jimvideo »

Hi folks my first post. I changed from a Sony DV camcorder to the latest Panasonic HDC-SD5 which records to an SD card. As the format is AVCHD, there is a supplied HDwriter for copying the files to my PC and it also can convert them to Mpeg 2 files. These play on Win Media Player 10 and also on a trial version of Pinnacle(which I hate), but VS10 Plus says "cannot read the file". I have tried adjusting things in the Project Properties window but no luck! Any thoughts would be most welcome please.

Thanks Clevo. I did see this article on the FAQ site but basically it sounds as if VS 10 wants me to make a DVD first and then transfer it from that into VS10 for editing, whereas in Pinnacle, it recognises the Mpeg2s straight off. :(

Video Studio seems to have trouble with some MPEG files. (You can get a variety of symptoms, depending on the particular MPEG.) Apparently, it doesn't "like" the files created by your conversion program. I have an MPEG capture card, and I had to buy a special-purpose MPEG editor.

As far as I can tell, AVI/DV still seems to be the most trouble-free format.

If you can't use the AVCHD directly, I don't have any good suggestions for you... A 3rd-party MPEG editor would be an awkward work-around for you and it might require you to use 3 or 4 different programs to get from camcorder to DVD!

Thanks DVDDoug. That is worrying. I may end up keeping my old Sony and selling the new all-singing and dancing Panasonic! :x

jimvideo,
Have you downloaded & installed the patches to VS10+.
Your source avc/h264 videos are probably in TS (transport stream) format. It's possible that the conversion program leaves the new mpeg2 file in TS format. VS10+ original release did not read the Mpeg2 TS stream format. (Until the patch)..
If you download & install the patch to VS10+ when you go to insert these mpeg2 files VS10+ will ask you do you want to convert them, answer YES and VS10+ will copy & convert the file to PS (program stream) format. Then VS10+ will load the video into the timeline. They would need to be converted to PS format to create a dvd anyway.

So, have you installed the latest patches to VS10+?
They are important to download & install.

Thanks I have downloaded SPI and UVS10 HD Burning pack and installed both. Still no joy and I couldn't see any other patches but I must admit I don't find navigating around the Ulead site all that easy. Are there any others I should look for? By way of further info. after using HD writer to copy from the Camera to the PC and then converting to Mpeg2, the file shows up as m2ts and is still unreadable.

OK,
Your original post
As the format is AVCHD, there is a supplied HDwriter for copying the files to my PC and it also can convert them to Mpeg 2 files
You said originally that your software is converting your files to mpeg2. If the file extension is m2ts they are probably still in the AVC/H264 format.
Mpeg2 is not the same format, mpeg2 is the standard format for dvd's. The new standard format that your panasonic highdef cam is called AVCHD Disks. A AVCHD Disk can be played like a dvd with titles, chapters & menus except that the video is in HighDefintiion. You need a HighDef player to play these disks such as a Sony Blu-Ray Player (PlayStation 3) ......
You can also downconvert the videos to mpeg2 to create standard dvd's.
For your information the Sony PlayStation 3 is a multi-media device. It can play the videos created on your cam directly. All you have to do is put the SD card into the PS3 and you can play the files directly from the streams folder (you can even copy them to the harddisk). PS3 is not just a game machine.

VS10+ does not work with these files AVC/H264 files.
To load these files directly and work with them OR import them from the SD card directly the only program I'm aware of is MF6+ Retail Version with PATCH#2 installed. This program works now with HighDefinition with Patch#2 installed.

You needed the patches to VS10+ anyway.

( Good call Steve! It was AVC/H264)

Thanks to all who replied with advice. I just received a reply from Ulead support after reminding them that I had asked them twice already! They admit that Ulead does not support AVCHD and having downloaded the trial version of 11Plus, I can confirm that is the case. I mentioned before that I received a trial version of Pinnacle 11 Plus with my new video cam and this does work, so reluctantly I am ditching Ulead and buying Pinnacle. Thanks again and Happy Movie Making to you alll! :)
