If you think back (in my case, wayyyyyy back! 
) to elementary school grammar, you pretty much get the idea. Essentially, it means to examine something closely or subject it to detailed analysis. And I think this is all that rather quaint description in VS means: that the program is analysing the DVD to see all its component parts, and to assess whether it is indeed capable of being imported.
