Basic vs Plus editions?

Post by ozzy667 »

I've almost got the last of the wrinkles out of my sample DVD and I'm definately sold on VS11 - thank to all the postings and video for helping with the wrinkles. Time to upgrade from the trial version.

I've compared the versions - basic and plus. Best I can tell there's nothing in plus that I'll miss by not getting it.

I'm mainly looking to convert Mini DV casettes from my 3 yr old Panasonic camcorder - not an overly fancy one, but it does the job. No plans to upgrade to a DVD or HD camcorder in the near future. Mostly home videos of our son.

We do not have an HD tv, and are quite satisfied with the non-HD output we've been getting from the trial version.

Although I do like the expandable timeline - I can live without it if this is the only feature I'd use by upgrading. The multiple overlay tracks are a little over my head right now - and I can`t think of any footage I`d be able to combine.

So my question is... Have I overlooked anything that will make me regret going the cheaper route in buying the basic version?

Best I can tell all the same template and sample items are included in both versions.

And while I'm asking - is there any benefit to having the boxed version sent (for an extra $20...) aside from physically having the discs? Download time is not an issue and I don't plan to replace my computer any time soon - still have 35 more months of payments!

Thanks in advance!

Hi Ozzy,
I think you should go to the Corel site and use the side by side comparison of the two and decide for yoursef if the plus features are really things that you would use rather than things that sound cool!
Given your plans for staying with SD for the moment and your simple requirements the basic version sounds good for you but as I say check the site.
If all has gone well for you then let's keep it going that way!
1. If you ugrade be sure to FULLY remove the trial version BEFORE installing the full version. VS is a bit of a messy beast and there have been numerous reports of trouble when the user has installed on top of the trial or tried to ACTIVATE the trial vesrion. FULL version on a CLEAN install. Do a search on this board and you will find the procedure for a Clean Install.
2. The dowload version means that you will be sent three download links for the program and the extra features. recently there have been reports of the notification emails only giving one download link and of course the trouble of getting the others then ensued. From that point of view I would go for the disc version if it is not too much trouble.
In earlier versions the disc offered also the opportunity to re-install in the case of trouble using a "repair" function which is handy to have.
If you do go with the download make sure you save a copy of the files to a CD along with a notebook file of your registration numbers etc for safekeeping.

Thanks for the reply - I've had a good look around the Corel site already. just wanting to make sure I didn't overlook anything.

Any idea if there are the same templates and sample files provided in both versions? This is my main concern - that I will miss out on some good things. I can't seem to find anywhere on the Corel site that clearly states if there are more/less/same of these with each version.

Thanks again

There's a $30 difference between the Plus and Regular versions. Dig thru your couch and scrape up all the loose change and spring for the Plus version. You won't be sorry.

The multiple overlay tracks are worth the difference alone.

I've got to admit I cheaped out and got the basic version...

I was at the checkout screen for the plus version - had even agreed to the "download insurance" (alway a sucker for the extended warranties...). BUT then I got hit with GST and PST taxes (I'm Canadian) which I didn't expect with an online download from what I assume is a US company. This brought the total price to $125.

So - I went with the basic version for $88 with download insurance and tax. I'll let you folks know if I get the buyers remorse.

Thanks for all the input!
