Can not capture from DVD-R

Post by oleson »

I would like to capture one of the chapters from a DVD-R format video but VS11 crashes before it ever gets started ('VS has encountered a problem ...'). I copied the file (.VOB extension) onto my hard drive but I still have a problem. If I try to capture from the file folder, the OK button is not high lighted and I cannot select the folder. If I try to open the file to edit it, I get a file mismatch error. What can I do or how are you supposed to do it? Any help appreciated. :(

I think you have to copy the whole DVD structure to your hard disc and try it again. Unfortunately, if you are using VS11, it no longer has the ability to be able to read .vob individually as video files (that feature came with VS10 and was quite useful because you could insert a .vob file directly into the timeline).

Otherwise, you can often just change the .vob to .mpg, and VS can then see the video.

Thank you for your timely reply. I succeeded in renaming the .vob file to .mpg and I can now open the file in Edit step to edit it. I would still like to know what the remedy is to capture directly from DVD without VS11 crashing every time. When I do Capture/Import from DVD the program parses the DVD and lists the chapters on the disk. When I select a chapter to Import, VS11 ends with msg 'VS... has encountered a problem and needs to close'. This is intolerable. Are other users having the same problem and is there a fix for this? I would appreciate some help with this.

You say
When I select a chapter to Import,
Can you first confirm that you tick the box beside the selection you make.

It is precisely when I try to tick the box next to chapter name (OR alternatively simply click on chapter name) that Video Studio abends. Clicking on anything in that window will abort the program. Help.

I was also overly optimistic in thinking that I was going to be able to edit the video in the Edit step. Even though I can play it back, weird things happen when I try to edit. I was mainly interested in picking out some frames as still images but so far I have not been able to do that. Changing .vob file to .mpg may not have been the solution. At any rate, a vital part of Video Studio is not functioning without applying some fixes. What sort of support can I expect for this problem?

can't capture dvd

I'm having the same problem. After the dvd is parsed and the chapter tree is presented, if I click on any chapter box then ulead stops responding. Is this possibly a Vista basic problem?

Mike,
I am encountering the problem on XP SP2. VS not only stops responding but comes out with the msg saying 'it has a problem and has to close'. I have not heard from Ulead/Corel any more so I don't know how much help there will be to resolve this.

Same problem in VS 10

I'm having the same problem in VS 10. This is a bug! Will Corel provide a fix?

can't capture dvd

I followed instructions found in this forum and copy/paste the .vob video files from the dvd to the hard drive. renamed with xtension .mpg and placed in timeline of vs 11+. Cumbersome but worked!!!!!!

Well, it sort of worked.

I copied the vob files in and renamed them. When I add them to the library, I see the first frame in the thumbnail, and in the video preview screen. When I click play, the view window goes black. When I click the PAUSE button, the frame that it is on displays in the window!

Also, there is no sound. I've noticed this with other clips I captured as well. I did not pursue it then because I was overlaying with music. Now it is critical that I get good audio sync'd with the video.

When I open these files in Windows Media Player they work fine.

I spent almost this entire day looking for some solution. I am getting so frustrated just trying to extract an 18 second clip from this dvd. This is the reason I purchased this program. Please help.

By the way, this is not a protected dvd. It is one created for our church by a local video services company. I am using VS10 under Vista.

Same problem

I have the same problem as the others. I click on Capture, then Import File Folder, then in the Import DVD window I try to select tracks but when I click on any of them (file folder or chapter to import) the application just sits there showing the hour glass... If I look at task manager it says the application is not responding..

Try to copy / paste the entire DVD to a hard drive folder and then import from there.

VS : Importing DVD Files

Well, that sort of worked... I was able to import the video portion of the file but the audio portion is very choppy, stuttering like your turning the audio portion off and on real fast and the video hangs up after a few seconds of playback...

Here's another strange thing I discovered... The one DVD I'm trying to edit has 2 titles in the file tree... Title 0 has 5 chapters in it and is about 10 minutes in length... Title 1 has 3 chapters in it and is about 2 minutes in length... I CAN successfully import Title 1, the shorter of the 2 Titles...

I have another DVD I try to Import and edit and it's about 30+ chapters and 19 minutes in length and I cannot import that one successfully either... The problem appears to point to file length although I haven't confirmed that...

Last night, I set my D drive as the working drive, did a deep registry scan on C and removed some trash and still no luck... Also did a defrag on C ( it said it wasn't needed but it looked kind of bad) but haven't tried that yet as I did that late last night before going to bed..

Bringing the files in from the hard drive resulted in stuttering audio files and video files that hang up and jump... When I try to import them this way from the hard drive, a little warning box tells me that they cannot be edited in this form, and do I want to modify them so that they can be edited to which I reply yes, otherwise they won't copy...

I really like VS10 for it's editing, effects, flying titles, etc., but this file importing of MPEG files is getting to be a royal pain!!! And it seems like I am NOT the only one having this problem... :x It was supposed to be mpeg compatible - that's the reason I bought it... The capture portion of it doesn't work - some cryptic message about the wrong codec and now even file import is erratic...

The real funny thing is I edited my daughters College graduation just a few weeks ago and didn't have any problems importing files so something has changed... About the only thing I have added since then has been an "all-in-one" printer, fax, scanner, copier to the system - an HP5700 series... I even did a system restore to before that point and that didn't help either...

Tonight I am going to completelyuninstall ULead and do another deep registery scan to clean up the junk and then reinstall again... If that doesn't do any good, maybe Womble is in my future

Any and all help is appreciated... Any other suggestions???

Well, I finally figured out a "work around" for this issue... I downloaded a trial version of Womble and imported the files there and copied them to VS...

I had to run them through the export routine to convert them to 16:9 - for some reason womble wasn't picking up the "flag" for 16:9 screen size but after that things worked fine...

Previously, in trying to remedy the problem, I had removed VS completely from my computer, then cleaned up any remnants left in the registry files with TweakNow Registry Cleaner, and then reinstalled the program... I STILL could not import files in VS after this...

So I guess I'll buy the Womble full package when my trial offer expires... From my limited time working with it, it seems to be pretty intuitive and having 2 editors appeals to me, but I hope that the guru's at VS are looking into the problem of importing MP2 files... It would seem that I am not the only one with this problem from what I read here...

The effects in VS work far better then any I have used of all the programs I have tried, and I love the animated titling feature... My videos render well using the double pass option and the "do not re render compliant mpeg files" option... The only issue I really have is the importation of the original files...
