Vista disables programs after I install Video Studio 11
I just installed Video Studio 11 Plus but when I rebooted, Windows Vista disables two startup programs:
- Installshield Update Service Scheduler
- Installshield Update Service Update Manager
I tried activating them again but they just get disabled again.
Anyone know how to resolve this?

So it's Windows problem really:PaulQ602 wrote:Guess I should have mentioned that...

So, I guess they need permission of some sort.

Thanks for the link. Those are the correct instructions for dealing with a blocked program but not resolving the root cause.Clevo wrote:[

No, it is not a Microsoft problem.
I have been doing some more research. It is apprently a Coel problem because this problem only seems to be associated with Corel and Ulead products and it has happened frequently over the past year.
It is attempting to run the Macrovision InstallShield updater (also, not Microsoft) in administrator mode which is unnecessary in most cases. The link above says to contact the publisher (Corel) for an updated version that does not require administrator access.
I'm not jumping on you - I just don't want this to be passed off as a Microsoft problem. Microsoft definitley has its problems but this isn't one of them. Corel knows how Vista operates by now so this makes no sense.
It looks like Corel needs to update the two Macrovision programs or they just won't run as startup program in Vista. Kind of a pain. With what I know now, it looks like those with Visa will need to wait on Corel.
(Although, I don't think these programs are critical for everyday use)
Absolutely no offense intended.

Curiously enough, I have a slight variant on this problem, though the root cause is obviously the same, and I personally find it very annoying too. On booting up my Vista Home Premium machine, I invariably get a message that User Account Control has blocked 'Installshield Update Service Update Manager'. Invariably, when I look at the blocked programs, there are two instances of this one program there. I get no mention of Installshield Update Service Scheduler.
I find this repeated blocking extremely irritating, especially since it just seemed to come out of nowhere. But now that you mention it, it has only occurred since I recently (re)installed VS11+ on this computer. So now the penny drops...
Normally, I just allow User Account Control to run the blocked program -- it goes through its routine of asking my permission each time (also very annoying), but this has to be done twice since, as I say, I get two instances of this Installshield Update Service Update Manager being blocked, and one permission does not unblock the two instances.
My situation is thus different in that the Service Scheduler is not being blocked, only the Update Manager. And the latter is not being disabled, only blocked since I presume it actually runs (and finds no updates) when I give the permission.
I had actually been hoping that there would be some way of putting the Update Manager on a general list of approved programs, to avoid this farce of blocking-and-permission each time I start the computer. But alas, I see from the link Clevo provided (for which, thanks) that the only options are to do as I do or else to drop the program from an automatic update search. I am tempted by the latter course of action....
The only other option I can think of is to uninstall VS11+ and leave it off this computer
since it is also totally p*ssing me off right royally because it also blocks the action of my webcam (which I use regularly) whenever I open VS. And the only solution to *that* is to re-boot the computer (and get the blocked programs message again!!) What with all the other problems VS11 is giving me and a host of other users, I truly regret having purchased it... And that comes from from someone who is normally a great Ulead fan!

I suggest you just disable the InstallShield programs from your start-up sequence. I am not positive but as far as I can tell, it will only disable automatic updating. You can still update manually.
I have done this but I need to see if it causes any problems long term.
Corel needs to issue a fix. I emailed them with the problem so we'll see if I get a helpful response (or one at all).

Ken, is this service added to the Vista installation as a new Ulead Service (possibly for the auto-update function under Preferences) and cannot run OR is this servicee an existing MS Vista Service that gets affected.I invariably get a message that User Account Control has blocked 'Installshield Update Service Update Manager'.
In other words is this a ulead update service or one of the Vista update services for the OS..

Again, not positive here but InstallShield is not an integral part of the OS. Windows has its own independent update service.
However InstallShield is used by many other programs. I know, for me, that I didn't specifically look to see if I had it before I installed Corel. Kind of a pain to uninstal and see if its there.
FYI - My first response from Corel was an autoresponse that did not answer my question. Awaiting second response.

etech -- like Paul, I simply don't know. Like him, I find that the service is associated with Macrovision Corporation, and I just don't know if Corel has some association with them or some Corel process involves a Macrovision program.
And again, this message has only started since installing VS11+...

I saw this on my Vista system and found that it is due to one of the startup programs in the windows registry. When blocked the computer ran OK anyway so I decided to simply delete the offending entry in the registry and it got rid of the annoying blocked program message.

To make matters even more murky, when I look at User Account Control Startup Programs, I see the file, which Vista tells me is blocked, is in fact Permitted. There are (or were) two entries for the same program. So I removed one of them. But when I went to remove the other, the Remove button was greyed out. So now I am thoroughly confused.

OK, think I'm getting the picture. In Steve's case the program was being loaded as a TSR during startup.
Vista's Defender program may have the program blocked from running. Probably considers it a security risk.
Maybe this link helps:

Take a look at this link, the bottom right sentence: Software Update Service
