VideoStudio techniques equivalent to those in Roxio

Post by Berzelius »

I have just switched from Roxio EMC7 to VideoStudio 11. I have found no trouble on starting my project but there a number of useful techniques in EMC7 for which I cannot find equivalent ones in VideoStudio. I would be grateful for any advice.

As background information, my project consists in taking about 200 short movie clips from my digital camera and producing a DVD. I have had no problems in the past doing this with EMC7. The large number of clips is why I would like to be able to do the following.

1) In EMC7, in the Storyboard view, it is possible to get the name of any clip by hovering the cursor over it. I cannot do this in VideoStudio and need to switch to the Timeline view to identify clips.

2) In my project, about every 5 or so clips, I wish to place a coloured block with informative text on it. I have found how to insert a colour block and put the text in the Title track. In EMC7 life can be made easier by copying the first colour block (with text), pasting it in where required in the Storyboard and doing any necessary editing of the text. Can this be done in VideoStudio? Copy works on the colour blocks but Paste is greyed out.

3) I intend to have a transition between each of the clips. In EMC7 you can do this once and there is then a command to repeat it automatically for all other clip transitions. Is this possible in VideoStudio? I really would like to avoid having to insert 200 transitions one at a time!

4) In EMC7 you can automatically apply a defined duration to all transitions and also a defined duration to all colour blocks. This makes it very easy to experiment with various durations and see which is the best. Can this be done in VideoStudio?

Welcome to the forums. VS is a beginner targeted video editor. It is pretty powerfull, but, sometimes you have to think "outside" the box to get it to do what you want. When it gets so complicated that it becomes more trouble to accomplish what you want in short span of time, you need a new editor. Therefore, the MSP 8.0 plug goes here.

In preferences, change the timeline view..

Nope, MSP Yes, otherwise you have to manually enter each one.

Sort of.. You can "default" to a common transition, again, in preferences.

Again, in preferences, you can set the default duration.

Try looking these videos over and you decide if VS is what you want. I think you really should make the move up to a better NLE. Just means a little more learning curve, but, the end results will please you.

Thanks for the info, especially about the default settings. Of course, all of this now raises further questions which it is probably best for me to post as new threads.

What you can do is drag a newly created title into the title library. A thumbnail appears in the library that you can use again and again. Altering the text manually and it also remembers any attribute effect incuded...in case you want to keep attributes the same.

Saving my titles in the library sounds useful. I will be using some of them a number of times.

I find it handy too. Especially if I want to keep the same fonts and attributes. But I find it easier just to add a new title as it's just a matter of clicking in the title track icon then clicking the screen at the place i want it.

But for uniformity the Library does help and you can also drag the new title into the library.
