MovieFactory 4.0 Disk Creator - cannot play MPEG files..

Post by vernerl »

Hello, I have tried to get a response from Ulead on a Tech. Support Form - but it looks like they have closed their support - They simply don't answer

Maybe I can get help here

Up to now I have used MF 3.0 SE to burn MPEG files to DVD.
After upgraded to MF 4.0 Disk Creator the problems begin..

When I open MF 4.0 and try to "add video file" the file is opened, but MF freezes and goes in "program do not respond" mode.

Another thing is, that after installed MF 4.0 either RealPlayer or Windows Media Player is able to play a MPEG file - they goes in "program do not respond" mode too.

If I uninstall MF 4.0 then MF 3.0 SE, RealPlayer and Windows Media player is working correct again !

Help me - what can I do to get MF 4.0 to work correct ?

regards

Sounds like a codec issue, to play mpeg2 you need a mpeg2 decoder which is not standard. It's either installed by playing software or an editor. MS Media Player (I think real player too) do not have a native DVD decoder.

Try this to identify problem codecs... Be cautios how you use this program if you use it to uninstall codecs. http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=Codec_Sniper

I've been following all topics since the release of MF4.0 which do not look very promising indeed for a new version.
I've also read that Ulead is about to be bought by Intervideo which would explain Ulead's "eagerness" to respond to their users.

Since I don't have spare-time to waste, I'll stick to MF3.5 for the moment allthough it doesn't have AC-3 support and customizable templates.

I just wait until
- a patch arrives
- or switch to another software

I have mpeg2 codecs, I can encode other mpg's. Most of the ones that will not, and crash MF4 (and MF3, I have both) are in the SVCD format. Even some SVCD mpg's work okay. They all work on my computer at work ( I don't really want to use that one). I tried Codec Sniper and mmview (which will let you just disable the codec), and I'm still having the problem. Any suggests on what is a good codec to use? I've tried several.
On a side note: I did install MF 3.5 and it would decode the same mpg's that I'm having problems with now in MF 4. I'm not sure what I did, but even MF 3.5 isn't working now. That rules out hardware, and codecs I would think. After uninstalling MF 3.5 and installing MF 3, the problems returned. I uninstalled MF 3.5 because it was the trial and was working, so I wanted to try MF 3 to see if it would continue to work. It didn't and figured MF 4 would work better. I like MF 4, however, it's pretty useless to me now until I can fix this.

Conflicts with MPEG-2 codecs in MF 4

I also had problems getting MPEG-2 files to play after installing MF 4, and the video would often jump when output to DVD. Using GSpot I discovered that MF 4 installed two new Ulead MPEG-2 codecs. It's these codecs that conflict with the codecs I already have on my system.

The existing codecs were installed with an analogue video capture card, and they work beautifully, so I'd rather not remove or disable them. And besides, I've noticed that capturing to MPEG-2 files under MF 4 results in colors that are washed out and smeared. The video looks like hand-tinted black-and-white.

My solution was to remove MF 4. Unfortunately, the MF 4 uninstall is buggy, and leaves pointers to the Ulead codec in the Registry. You must actually roll your system back to a point before installing MF 4.
