Some general animated giff advice please

Post by Gra »

Hi Guys
I'm not sure this is the right place, but any help would be welcome from your overall knowledge.

I do a lot of surfing the MSP 8 forum and one of the participants, called Devil, has recently introduced an avatar. The other day I accessed that forum from another PC and found it was actually an animated Giff avatar. Can anyone here suggest why it is displaying as a static image rather than an animation on my PC and what I might do to start it animating???

Usually it's the browser settings. Which browser do you use? Did you enable gif animation?

If you're using Internet Explorer, you can also try emptying the Temporary Internet Files folder...

Tools, Internet Options... and emtpy the temp files from the button there.

Hi Guys and thanks

I'm using IE7 and I've emptied my temp folder but no success. I cannot find a 'enable gif animation' setting in the tools/ options panel. Am I looking at the wrong place?

This problem is bizzare because as far as I can see things work perfectly elsewhere.
Thanks & regards.

In IE, look in "Tools, Internet Options" then select the "Advanced" tab. In the Multimedia part is "play animations in web pages."

Note that some security software prevents animations from playing. If you have such software and it's set to block advertising banners or the like, try turning off the ad blocking.

You could also try Firefox and see if it plays with that browser.

Thanks Viking
I always like to know why something is doing or not doing what it ought. It was the block ads/ pop-ups in my Zone Alarms security suit. I'll look into it to see if it can allow selected site pop-ups, ads.

Many thanks again for your advice.
Thanks & regards.

You're welcome!

ZA Security Suite will indeed mess with things. I disabled all ad-blocking with ZA, and deal with the ad annoyance with other software. Less problems with GIF files and other things that way.

Animated gifs need to be on a server.

If they are in your system like Desktop or HD file they will only show the first frame.

A work around is to open a word document save it as HTML with the Gif File in the document. That might work.

Clevo, that's not correct. Windows Picture Viewer will display gifs with animation, as will IE or any other browser, or an image viewer such as IrfanView.
