What to select: I420, RGB216, RGB24, YUY2

Post by LeoA »

Hi,
I use MSP7.0
When capturing from my analog camera through a capture card i can choose different compressions in the Video Capure property settings window: I420 RGB16 RGB24 YUY2 and YVU9
Also should i choose software compression yes or no?
Hope someone can give me a correct answer, as no one seems to know what tu use.
Thanks in advance

How long is a piece of string? First of all, because you haven't filled in all the details in

we can't really answer, because no one here knows what your computer will support, do they? We don't even know what your capture card is or does, do we? Does it do hardware compression? If so, with which codecs? etc.

Sorry, i have updated my profile now.
The capture card is a Video action PCI card from Hercules.
Cannot find anything about hardware compression on it.
But can you still answer, what is the best, hardware or software compression?

OK, I had a look at the specs of your card. I saw that it will capture in MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DV, DivX. I would strongly recommend that, of these, you capture in DV, because it is the least lossy under normal conditions and will give you the best and easiest results. I was not able to tell whether the codecs used are soft- or hard-ware but both are equally good or bad. A good one of either is better than a poor one of either. That said, it may be that it will support other software codecs, but this was not specified.

The problem is that i can't capture in DV, because it's an analog camera.
I have a dozen of Hi8 tapes which i wan't to capture.

In that case capture to MPEG2.
Do some homework first and work out in advance how long your completed DVD is likely to run for and then capture using the appropriate bit rate settings
What Bit Rate Settings etc Should I use? - The reason for this is so that you can then "Smart Render". The aim is to render a video the least number of times preferably once, because each time you render you risk loss of quality and possible audio/video synchronisation issues.

I think your card does an analogue>DV conversion. The specs clearly say this.

Capturing in MPEG is an option, but it's as frame accurate as capturing in AVI is.

I'm sorry Devil but i dont't know what you mean. I must use the analogue output (s-vhs) from my camera don't I?
When i choose the DV input it says that no device is connected.
Seems correct to me. Can you please explain what you mean?
Thanks everybody for the answers anyway.

I don't know your card; I'm going only by the specs that clearly seem to indicate that you can convert from analogue to DV. I suggest you read the instruction manual for the card as to how to implement it or go to a forum appropriate for your card. Make sure you follow the instructions for capturing DV in the Video Capture module.

Mpeg should be the target destination, whether it's for DVD or pc, internet, etc. If you can, always edit in AVI.

If the target is DVD render to mpeg-2, if it's internet, mpeg 4, but, some sites don't care and render it to flash anyways, no matter what format you send.
