hi - sorry for this notoriously dumb question.
MSP8 - I have a bunch of WMV files which I am trying to drop into the timeline and I was wondering how I go about enabling MSP to allow me to do this?
Is there a way of importing WMV files that the forum recommends?
Should I convert to AVI first using some 3rd party tool - if so, what do you guys recommend?
I looked at the Ulead plugins but it seemed to be for cellphones and other appliances I think...
thanks for any guidance!
what's the recommendation - importing video??
Not so dumb a question. This is a Microsoft generated problem. For some unknown reason, MS doesn't like people editing WMV. Apps that used to be able to handle WMV, such as VirtualDub, no longer can. I don't have a solution, but have you tried this?

I've been working* on a tutorial for "dabear" and have generated a WMV file of the screen display. This file imports perfectly into MSP just by dragging the file onto the timeline.
MSP needs to "prepare" the file before editing, a step that you can avoid if you turn on indexing when creating the WMV.
* Waiting for a quiet house so I can record the dialogue - I may just have to use subtitles, it's never quiet here...

I take offense at this statement, I edit WMV files with a vengence... ahem (actually I don't take offense)Devil wrote:Not so dumb a question. This is a Microsoft generated problem. If you use an earlier WMV encoder, no problem. It's the latest one that mucks things up. That's why I said "no longer can"MrAmigo2121 wrote:I take offense at this statement, I edit WMV files with a vengence... ahem (actually I don't take offense)Devil wrote:Not so dumb a question. If you search the windows media encoder help file for "index" or "indexing" the very first result answers your question.octavious wrote:... thanks for the info guys. OK I got Windows Encoder 9. But what exactly does it mean to "prepare" the file before editing and where would I "turn on indexing"?MSP needs to "prepare" the file before editing, a step that you can avoid if you turn on indexing when creating the WMV.
No idea what it is, don't care; but if you want to speed up WMV editing in MSP, the file needs to be indexed.
