Straight Capture to Disc failed.

Post by stelch »

Hi
I have a VHS tape and I want to Straight Capture to Disc. When I start to Capture after a few seconds I get the following message: "Capture failed. The file may be corrupt. Delete this file." I did installed Patch 2 and the quality of the VHS tape is good. What else can I check to avoid this message.

Are you able to capture to your hard drive? ...IMHO, analog capture is hard enough without trying to burn at the same time! (A stand-alone DVD recorder can do it, but it has dedicated-specialized hardware, such as hardware MPEG encoders, and it's not getting interrupted by a multitasking operating system running in the background.)

Don't multitask and make sure no other programs are running during capture. I try not to touch my computer during capture.

Make sure your computer meets the minimum speed and RAM requirements for your capture device.

In general, you should capture to your hard drive using the software that's specially made to work with your capture hardware. (Most hardware capture devices come with their own capture software.)

What I use is my Sony camcorder that has a DV Converter (pass through). In other words I connect the Video OUT of the VHS recorder to Video IN of my camera and the camera (while in the VCR mode) converts the analogue signal to DV one. I connect then the DV OUT of my camera via Firewire to my PC.
I do not use any program while I am capturing. The only program that runs is the MovieFactory.

MF5 or MF6, if MF6 passthrough devices do not work.
Passsthrough device may not work in MF5 either, never tried it but MF6 needs a DV signal from a device that can be controlled.

I am using MF6. Pity that pass through devices don't work. Any other alternative?

I downloaded the DMF6+ trial version, tried a capture and got the same "Capture Failed..." message. I'm using a Plextor PX-M402U to capture from the DirecTV satellite box - is that considered pass-through?

In DMF6+, the preview visual and audio look and sound just fine. I set up to capture, click "Capture" and it shows it is capturing, all looks well.

But when I click "Stop Capture" - I get the "Capture Failed..." message.

I don't see in this thread anything that would help my case, unless I too have the pass-through problem. Any ideas how to get my captured files to close properly? Thanks.

This is a completely different process and has nothing to do with your problem. Your problem has been addressed in a different thread. Please keep it that way. Your problem is caused by your capture card. Use the program supplied with that card and you should be fine.

You can put a tape into your camcorder and record the analog source first to MiniDV tape. Later you can capture it like any other DV source.

MF6+ didn't work before in pass-through mode when first released.
After installing Patch# 2 to the retail version I can now capture in pass-through mode. I'm using a JVC cam without a tape in the unit & setup for passthrough mode.
Never tried capturing in pass-through mode after Patch# 2 was released until recently.

Many of my Home VHS tapes started in the 80's. Heinz's suggestion to transfer them to DV tape is important if you ever need to capture the footage again.
Don't expect the original VHS tapes to last forever. Transferring them to DV has been my best method of saving those videos.
