Windvd4 & Vista (updating and not working fully question

Post by FTLOSM »

I had xp home and installed windvd4 off the disc I got when I bought my last video card I believe, it was an add-on or something, anyways really enjoyed using it for dvd playback over mediaplayer.

I only watch a movie now and then but it has always installed and worked fine on my xp home laptop and desktop.

Recently bought a new dual core HP computer with Vista Premium and went to install this to use to watch movies, the install appeared to go ok yet at first I get a popup type warning that says

IVIVID~1
JPEG:
Can't open spash.jpg

I hit ok and it opened the viewer window (figured ok fine no splash.jpg but at least the program seems to work), yet I get no typical menu bar to let me choose or set options for playback like I was used to on my xp based system.

Guessing this is some sort of Vista compatability issue? Wondered was there anything I can do upgrading wise or any adjustments I can try or make that might help fix this? I can right click on the screen and get some basic menu options but they are somewhat limited and harder to control via this method vs the standard control panel that I used to be able to access and use on the same program thru xp home (that menu bar seems to have dissapeared when I installed this same program on vista machine).

I know some may laugh at my older version here (I am many steps behind the current version and i realize this) but for now and then basic dvd playback I really liked this program and didn't feel it needed any improvements for my limited use.

Iwas just hoping if there is or was a way to use windvd4 in Vista Premium and still get my full menu bar and such (maybe a tweek or adjustment or nominal fee upgrade) then I would still continue to use it.

Man that sounded like it just might fix this issue for me, tried it for windvd here but saw no change still not getting the actual menu bar/control panel to come up like it used to in xp and previously in w2k for me.

I remember there were some options to hide the control panel bar but can't even find anything to check or uncheck to adjust that by right clicking on the screen I do get some options play ff rew etc but everytime I loaded this in the past on older systems that control panel would come up after installing it by default so I doubt that's it.

I will monkey with a few more of the settings within that (display options) and see if any of them make it work or not, thanks for that handy tip on adjusting older programs with Vista, cuz I will try it with a few other smaller older apps I love using that Vista didn't seem to play nice with when I installed them.

Spent a good 20 mins trying every combo i could find within the vista menus for older OS and display options but no luck, guess it is time to either chuck out a few bucks buy a newer version or just find a different alternative (some freeware app or something).

I just never have liked mediaplayer for some reason, silly I guess cuz all I do is watch a movie now and then, just got hooked on windvd4 here over the years...

For what its worth I tried everything I could and couldn't get the latest Vista Compatible Version WinDVD 8 Platinum, not even WinDVD 8 Silver that comes with VideoStudio 11+ to run on my copy of Vista Home Premium.
No problems with it on my XP system.

I have just put it down to being a 'Vista Thing' - in fact I found Vista had problems with most software until you upgraded to the latest version, which should really have solved the WinDVD thing because it is.

I am aware though that other users have not had those same issues and so suspect in my case it might be hardware related and so gave up.

My advice to you would be to download and run the Free Trial before committing yourself to purchasing an upgrade.
