Audio breaking up on timeline

Post by Mike Warren »

in Studio 10, audio breaks up when theres a narration clip over a music clip on the timeline. When separated they're fine. They are also fine if I play with "audio view" on or if they've been selected. Other then that, when they are together (on top of each other) their sound breaks up. Yet audio view shows no breaking up in sound wave pattern. And idea??? Thanks. Mike[/img]

Is the audio breaking up when you PREVIEW or after you render?
If it occurs when you are previewing then I suggest that it is due to your PC not "keeping up" as it has to render and display at the same time and could be running out of resources.
Make sure that you are not running any other processes while editing
Also make sure that you have "playback method" (in preferences) set to "instant playback" and not "high quality playback" to take pressure off the processor (cpu).

Won't capture and audio still breaking up.

Post by Mike Warren »

Thanks John. I did as you said, but sound still breaks up when I play my project on timeline... before rendering. When it plays music and narration together it acts like its walking through deep snow. I must tell you I now have a big mess, and in middle of very big project. This all started after recently upgrading my computer with new motherboard and Pentium 4-3.0 GHZ with 3 gig ram. Instead of improvement, I have this problem. Also won't capture now. When I try, I get window stating "Failed to initialize the video capture plug in. Another program may be using it or the file has been moved." Or I'm told it can't find capture drive. I've not the least idea where or what that is. Lastly, a while ago I installed Ulead studio 11. But... when I now select it via desktop icon or in programs listing, studio 10 opens instead. I keep getting Studio 10, which is now giving this trouble. John, do you or anyone have an idea of what is causing all this??? Would be grateful for any advice. Mike

Mike,
I have no idea what the cause could be.
If you upgraded your PC recently did you re-install VideoStudio?
If not I would suggest un-installing it and then re-installing. You should not loose anything but just in case back up the following folder before un-installing -
C:\Documents and Settings\your login username\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio\10.0

After re-installation open VideoStudio and check that all your thumbnails in each 'library' are still there. If not copy the back made above back to the existing folder you backed up.

Now check if you still have the problem.

I am not sure if this will make any difference but it is what I would do to start.

Maybe some of the more 'senior' members may have a better idea (ie Steve or Ken)

What about your sound card? Did you change that too?

windows often has trouble with 3gb ram, unless you are using 64bit or server models. You can use a hack to get windows xp 32 bit to see nealry 3gb, but it often causes problems. If you have normal XP, then remove 1gb and leave in 2gb only.

If you render it and save it as a dv.avi file and drop it on the timeline, what is teh result of now playing this file? If it plays fine, it's your pc that's not coping when you play it direct from the timeline.

Did you reformat the hdd and re-install windows and all your apps? It is by far the best thing to do when installing new hardware such as motherboard etc. Just using the old hdd as was often causes problems such as yours.

Thank you, gentilmen! I will try all that you suggested and get back to you. Incidently, just before upgrading, I had also installed Soundblaster Xtreme Hi Fi sound card. Also my Inter Video DVD player started acting up at this same time (video moves jerky, like stills). And a window about problem with Roxio Media Experience appears smack accross Inter Video screen. What a mess! Again, thank so much for helping. Mike

Did not reformat HD... but had computer guy spend an hour looking for cause of sound breaking up. Finally he discovered it. It seems I had added a sound effect to my narration sound tracks in the past, called "sound leveling" to boost the volume of my narration, along with "amplify". But the former was, for some strange reason, causing narration and music to break up. Removing this effect left audio fine again.

That it could not capture or find capture drive or plug in VS 10 seems to be due to VS 11 taking it over (a thing I don't understand). Same thing when I try to load my video project onto VS 10 timeline. I now get window saying it does not recognise the file format, though I made it on Vs 10. But... it will load into VS 11 with no problem. I seems the big brother has taking over. Can anyone understant this? Why can't they function independently and unaffected from each other. Would splitting them, like putting VS 11 on my D drive and leaving VS 10 on the C drive help???

VS is a fine video editor, but it's not much of an audio editor. If you want to add effects I would use Audacity, or check out the Free Stuff post where you will find actual plug-ins for VS that work nicely.

Did you edit the project at all in v11? If so, you probably wouldn't be able to open it again in v10. Not backwards compatible.(?) Simply opening it in v11 might have done it.

Also check to make sure any MB intergrated Sound device is turned off in BIOS Setting if you want to use the Sound Blaster Card.

Capturing problem

Post by Mike Warren »

Gentlemen, thanks for all your help up to now. But... I've still got problems with capturing. In VS 11 when I press "Capture Video" I now get a Ulead VS window saying, "When capturing, press the ESC. key or click the Capture button to stop the process. Click OK to start capturing video." So I click OK, and now I get a Ulead VS window saying, "Cannot start the capture graph", whatever that is. Just a week ago I captured on my VS 11. Now I'm suddenly getting these messages which will not allow me to capture. I must instead capture on another video editing software on my computer, which is rather simple... yet it does what Ulead Video Studio won't. Hope someone knows what this is all about. Mike
