MF5+ best video formats

Post by pdukey »

After a no show of the quicktime.mov on the finished product, I was wondering (after readme and searching this board) what are the best formats to begin with? Top 5 in order would be awesome. By converting prior I can have my video in top shape MF5+ should be a breeze.

The least-compressed formats cause the least trouble.

1. AVI/DV (usually from a MiniDV camera) is compressed to 13GB per hour and it rarely causes trouble. Note that "AVI" is a container format and it can contain anything from DV to DivX. The "DV" part is very important!

2. MPEG-2 is the standard DVD format. If you feed Movie Factory a good DVD-compliant MPEG-2, if you don't edit it, and if you select Do Not Convert Compliant MPEGs, everything should be fine, and the whole process will go quickly because Movie Factory Doesn't have to re-render to MPEG-2. However, I've had trouble with some MPEGs, especially when I've edited them. (Look at my tagline below for a hint.)

3. MOV, WMV, MPEG-4, DivX, Xvid, etc. These highly compressed formats seem to cause lots of trouble! It can be hit-or-miss. I'm sure some MOV cameras make "good" files that Movie Factory can handle, but if you search the forum for "MOV", you will discover that lots of people have trouble with this format. :(
