Bundled software

Post by ICELED »

Obviously this is in no way a criticism of Ulead, but why do the manufacturers of video gear bundle versions of Ulead software that aren't compatible with the video formats profuced by the equipment?

I've come here trying to figure out why my copy of VS6SE bundled with the brand new Mustek DV5000 (MPEG4) won't play dice. I see ovners of Sony products having the same sort of trouble.

When I choose to buy a product based on the advertising, isn't it reasonable to expect that the software advertised as part of the package should actually work with that product? I'm considering taking this up with the UK trading standards because it seems to me to be a form of deception. Admittedly the cost of upgrading isn't that high (although until version 9 is available, to use MPEG4 will require purchase of the plug-in as well as the upgrade) - but the extra cost is not apparent until the product has been delivered.

The product specs say mpeg4/divx . Divx is free and compatible with VS8.

I agree 100%. I purchased an Olympus c770 that takes great mpeg4 videos, and have been trying to load them into SV8., whisch of course I find impossible. Ii thik it is deceptive on both Ulead and Olympuc. Your comments are the first I have seen that actually says the program will not recognize the movies. It's frustrating as hell.

It's not deception by Ulead, they state that MPEG4 support requires a separate codec. The fault lies with the electronics manufacturer for licensing a product that is not suitable for use with their device without purchasing Ulead's MPEG4 plugin, or using another MPEG4 codec. If they wanted to do the right thing, they'd license the Ulead MPEG4 plugin and include it on the CD.

We've also heard stories here from people who bought DVD burners that came bundled with Videostudio SE versions that only supported CD (VCD/SVCD) media. Again, Ulead has a product that can work with the hardware, but the vendor decided to license a less expensive version without this feature.

Can you go directly to the card and copy the video to your HD? If so what format is it in? Technically the Divx codec is mpeg 4.

Olympus' tech support is confused -- UVS will not support MPEG4 without an MPEG4 codec, either Ulead's MPEG4 plugin, or a third-party MPEG4 codec such as DivX or XviD.

Where do I get this third party codec?

You can use DivX or XviD.

I don't understand the licensing issues here. Windows media player 9 happily plays the mpeg4 movie files on my desktop and another editing suite I am looking at now says that it supports mpeg4 if the codecs are installed. Surely they must be installed for WMP9 to play them?

Also VideoStudio shows the mpeg4 movie files when they are dropped on the timeline and previews them OK, it just gets messed up when movies are assembled for output. This makes it seem as if it is more like an oversight in the application coding rather than some licensing issue.
