Panning into an overlay

Post by vpjon »

I have downloaded Ulead Video Studio 11 trial to compare with Pinnacle Studio Plus 10. I had previously used Ulead Video Studio 8. At this point I am much happier with VS11 but I may have maxed out its capabilities. I am trying to place the image of a building into a pan of the property it will be built on. I have the image keyed so that just the building appears. As a static image everything is fine if I place it where the pan ends. What I am trying to do is bring the image (overlay) into view as the boundary of the pan hits the "edge" of the image. I have tried putting the overlay in motion coming into the frame as the pan hits the mark. But I am having trouble timing that out so that overlay doesn't appear too quickly or move out of sync with the camera. Does anyone have any tips? The only other way I can see to do this is to place a new image "frame-by-frame" which seems very tedious. There is no audio to be bothered with. I'm just trying to get the visual correct. I've searched the forums but if you can direct me to a tutorial that covers this I would appreciate it.

Maybe I'm not understanding you correctly, but why can't you just fade-in the building overlay?

Hmmmm, I reread and see a different way of looking at the question . . .

Can't you create a vid that's a pan of the building in its location with the background keyed out and then use it as an overlay?

Maybe you can clarify what you're trying to do a bit better for me.

BTW, is this for a design competition? Have a smidgeon of experience with that.

Panning into an overlay

LGO, Thanks for the reply. BTW: This is a presentation to the property owners illustrating what will be built on the property. The image of the building is the architect's rendering. The video unfolds like this. The property is a former farm. This scene opens on the left most side of the property and then pans right about 90 degrees. Midway through the pan, the building would come into the frame and as you pan past the area where the building would be situated, more of the building appears until it is all in the frame by the time you reach the end of the pan. The building is on an overlay. I can animate the overlay to enter from the right of the frame so that more of the building is coming into the frame as the vid continues to cover more of the building site. But I am having trouble getting the animation speed to match the pan speed so that the building appears to be standing still as the pan moves across it. I can take a still of the property and place the building on that still and then pan across that with the pan effect in the software, but that doesn't have the impact that the method I am describing has. I hope this helps clarify the issue.

vpjon . . .

1.) I'm thinking that you really need Cool3D Production Studio to synch things simultaneously. Be that as it may . . .

2.) From what you wrote, the end of your building overlay will coincide with the end of the pan video. Therefore your problem is the entry, correct?

3.) I'm assuming the overlay is not a static image - it's a video, correct?

4.) I'm also assuming the overlay video has the background keyed out (transparent) so the only thing on it is the building. Correct?

5.) If so, how is the overlay appearing? If you're trying a fade-in effect (or some other effect), then it will take a bunch of time to synch it satisfactorily. Just have the overlay video start with no effect.

6.) I would have two videos [a.) the pan of the property and b.) the building overlay) as well as a still shot of the building in its final position on the property. You can make the still shot from the last frame of the overlay video if you need to.

6a.) I would insert the the overlay and the pan video so they end at the same time.

6b.) Do not have any entry effect whatsoever for the overlay. Slowly move the overlay toward the front of the video until you have its appearance at the time or position on the property that you want.

6c.) If you have leftover time on the pan video, insert the still image in the overlay track at the end of the overlay video. You can adjust its duration to however long you need to make it to coincide with the end of the pan video.

I'm sure I'm not understanding what you're working with for the overlay so maybe a bit more info from you can help my answers for you.

Good luck,
