Ulead VideoStudio11 crashes when 2nd dvd attempts to burn

Post by LoverOfJoy »

My sister bought Ulead VideoStudio 11 and has been having a recurring problem.

My sister has been trying to burn multiple dvds. After it gets to 99% completed she hears a beep and an error message comes on the screen. It says:
THIS APPLICATION HAS REQUESTED THE RUNTIME TO TERMINATE IN AN UNUSUAL WAY. PLEASE CONTACT THE APPLICATIONS SUPPORT TEAM FOR MORE INFORMATION.
When she clicks for more details it says:

The dvd seems to work but she has to restart videostudio and go through the whole hour-long processing again to burn another identical dvd.

Any ideas what may be wrong and how to fix it?

She also said that ever since she installed it, when she closes it at the end of the day it always gives another error....something like Ulead has unexpectedly terminated (a windows error). When I tried it just now on her computer I did not get an error, though. Perhaps it is only after it's been running a while or she uses certain features?

She is running Windows Vista with 1.5GB RAM and an Intel Pentium4 3.2Ghz processor.

Others have reported instances of 'memory creep' with VS11 i.e. where the program's use of RAM creeps up till it is using 100% of system resources. This could be the case here and is causing the initial error message at 99% of the process -- even though the final DVD is fine. We believe Corel is working on a general patch which should include this and other problems, though we have no clear idea when the patch might be issued.

One alternative your sister might try if she is burning a lot of copies is not to burn an actual disc first time round (or next time). Instead, when she gets to the final page of the burning module, she selects instead either 'Create DVD Folders' (which is my personal preference) or 'Create Disc Image'. The first creates a Video_TS folder which contains the final structure of the full DVD. You use a third party program to burn as many copies of this to DVD as you want. It also serves the purpose of allowing you to check for errors by playing the folder back on a software DVD player like PowerDVD or WinDVD before you commit to burn a disc. I personally use the Nero > DVD > Burn DVD Video Files command.

This method of using a third party program might also then avoid the memory creep problem with VS11.

The Disc Image alternative prepares an exact image of the final DVD which again is burned to DVD as many times as you like. Again, you can use a third party program like Nero for this, but VS11 also contains a module called the Ulead Disc Image Burner, which will also do the job. This burner is separate from the main burning module and is installed, in the download version, from the third (Bonus Content) file.

Note that in either case, you cannot just use Windows to copy either an ISO file or Video_TS folder to a DVD as it does not copy the necessary lead-in and lead-out codes which are needed to tell a DVD player that it is a *video* DVD. Otherwise, the player will only see a data disc and will not play it.

Thanks Ken.

Do you know what to look for to find out if a 3rd party program will burn the Video_TS folder properly with the lead-in, lead-out codes so that it plays properly in a dvd player?

I've burned ISOs before but I agree that your first option is probably more useful. I just am unfamiliar with what to do with those folders.

Is there free software available that would do this?

I don't know of any freeware programs, though there very well may be. However, what program do you use to burn your ISO files? Normally, a program which will do this will also burn Video_TS folders (although I acknowledge that this is not the case with the Ulead Disc Image Recorder which will only deal with ISO files). As I say, Nero can definitely do it, as can a similar suite of programs by Roxio. Other users will probably be able to make other suggestions.

However, if you don't have such a program and don't want to buy a new one, use the the ISO route....
