FFDShow Codec

Post by skiddaw »

Hi all,

I've been encountering a lot of problems with a codec called FFDShow which has randomly appeared on my computer. I have a clean install of Vista premium 32 bit and have only installed divx, quicktime, ulead video studio, photoimpact and a game called bioshock. All of a sudden whenever I use media player or video studio, multiple task bar boxes called ffdshow appear at the bottom of the screen whenever I play videos. This ultimately crashes my system and means i can't export videos.

I was wondering has anyone else experienced this? I have no idea how ffdshow appeared on my computer, unless perhaps it is bundled with divx or comes natively with Vista.

Any help in removing this thing would be much appreciated! Its so annoying because there's no uninstall options or anything. Many thanks.

I would guess DivX.

ffdshow is an open-source codec that usually comes with free software. I don't think it should cause problems by itself. Something is telling it to run... Maybe DivX linked it to your video files and it runs every time you open a video file... :?

I don't think it has anything to do with DivX -- though I acknowledge that, as an open source Direct Show codec, it can be installed by other programs to play a wide variety of other standard formats, including DivX and XVid. I have operated DivX for years on computers running from Windows ME, through XP to Vista now. And nothing has ever linked DivX files to play with ffdshow. The DivX codec is, after all, what it is all about and of course it comes with its own DivX player. My only installation of ffdshow came with some third party program which used it, though I can't for the life of me remember which one it was. (SUPER?)

I would however check your file associations for the various video formats to see which one or ones are set to play with the ffdshow player. Then change it to play with some other program. Or remove the ffdshow codec manually -- though I confess I have no idea how to do this with Vista. (However, my Vista computer does not have that codec on it as far as a full search reveals... So I am pretty certain it does not come as part of Vista.)
