16:9 movie is distorted and cropped on 16:9 flat screen

Post by movie.maker »

I have a problem to get my self made 16:9 DVD movie right on my DVD player / tv.
The DV tape was recorded in 16:9 and edited in MediaStudioPro 8.0. The project settings were also 16:9 as well as the finally generated movie (mpeg). I took DVDLab as authoring tool and took also 16:9 for format.
When I watch the DVD on my PC it is shown right in 16:9 without any distortions and black bars at the top and bottom, but watching it on tv I don't get the wished result. On a 16:9 flat screen tv the movie is horizontally stretched and cropped at the right and left side (more on the left then on the right). I have tried different settings on the DVD-Player and tv without full success.
I assume that it should be possible to get the whole picture undistorted on the flat screen. What I am doing wrong? Can anybody help me?

Thanks,
movie.maker

PS: I am a little bit confused that 16:9 DV format has 720 x 576 as well as 4:3. Are just pixels unsquared?

Perhaps it may clear things up if I say that DV doesn't (with most cameras) produce 16:9 images, only 4:3 with the top and bottom blacked out, so that the actual picture is about 430 pixels high; the other 146 pixels are wasted. (this does not apply to anamorphic cams). The pixel shape is exactly the same, as the whole image is still 576 pixels high (figures for PAL). If you take it as is into a NLE set for 16:9, the AR of the actual image will be 256:81 (3.16), not 16:9 (1.78), because the overall 4:3 frame size will be stretched to 16:9.

movie.maker,

When you say "When I watch the DVD on my PC it is shown right in 16:9 without any distortions and black bars at the top and bottom" do you mean that it is "shown right" without distortion and with black bars or "shown right" without either distortion or black bars?

Can you provide a screen shot?
