Importing DVD files

Post by peterdb »

I wanted to import "normal" dvd dual layer disc files into VS11 but it only would import what appears to be the first layer, the rest of the video seens inaccessable any idea why?
When I tried it on a mate Pinnacle Studio it did it without problems

It depends on how the dual layer disc is created.

Bcoz some DVD players cant play dual layer discs, if they are created from an ISO file.

Similarly VS might have issues if its created in particular way.

I have created DVD+DL discs (using VSO software) and imported them back into VS without any problem.

Hi thanks for the reply and info.
I actually created the dual layer discs on a Sony player recorder in my lounge room.
These discs were created from a VHS video tape so you may have a point.
However the discs play OK in the computer with power DVD ect and VS also read the first layer,
when I tried it in the Pinnacle software it read it all OK so I know my DVD drive is reading it OK.
it just seems funny that VS cant get the second layer.
Thanks for your input I will test a Dual layer when I burn one in VS .

Can you tell us exactly what appeared when you used 'Insert DVD/DVD-VR' on your DVD? What appeared on screen by way of the directory tree of the disc? Did you test preview each of the units showing in that directory tree to confirm that none of them was from the second layer?

Hi Ken
Well that's not easy .
I am only guessing that it stops when trying to read the "second layer" because to answer you question :
When I go to "import DVD/VR" select the drive then "import " the "Parse DVD content" box appears it the starts to parse content and alway stops at exactly 61%.
it does this on any of these discs I try.
is this any help ?
Thanks for your interest

It is possible that you may be a victim of a dll file that has affected some users.

Hi thanks for your input,
However I have not done as you sugested yet as I read through the link you sent and one of the replies on that page said "do not use this fix if you are using AVCHD file"
Well unfortunatly I do frequently use AVCHD files.
So it's perhaps not a good idea to use this fix is it?

I used to have the 61% problem when importing (single-layer) DVDs created on my DVD recorder.

Get hold of a small (free) tool called FixVTS (http://www.videohelp.com/tools/FixVTS).

Copy (eg using drag and drop in Windows Explorer) your DVD to your hard drive. Run FixVTS, drop one of your newly-copied .vob files onto it and click 'Full DVD'

Then try importing the result into VS (remembering to import the copy on your hard drive).

This solved the problem completely for me. Hope this helps!

Thanks. I had forgotten completely about FixVTS which I even have on my main computer and have used, though for other purposes...

The work round here is to have both versions in the directory but to rename the dll extension so that only 1 is active and the other dormant.
you would then have to manually rename the two files as and when you require AVCHD or standard.

A handy utility to do this is Batch run
