Movie Factory renders my slideshow with blown out colors

Post by B2 »

Greetings. I am taking a .WMV file created in Microsoft Photo Story (slide show software) and burning it to DVD with Movie Factory 6. The original WMV file has great quality. However, when rendered by Movie Factory, the images appear a bit washed out. In other words, they are brighter and the highlights are blown out a bit. It affects some of the slides more than others.

I have posted an example of how a frame looks before and after Movie Factory 6 renders it on my website:

Be advised I am using the TRIAL version of the program. It will NOT let me run the two post release patches. I have configured the project for maximum quality settings as follows:

- Resample quality = BEST
- Anti flicker filter = ON
- Two pass conversion = ON (not sure if this means anything to mu project)

Thank you ahead of time for any thoughts you may have on this.

Patches usually do not work with trial versions, never have.

Converting a highly compressed wmv file to mpeg2 for DVD is not something I would advise to do. Wmv has non standard frame size and frame rates. These have to be made compliant by the software. There would have to be quality trade offs because the program has to "guess" the contents of newly created pixels. That's why the images look washed out.

Try one of the smaller frame sizes allowed by the DVD standard, not full screen 720 x 576 (PAL) or 720 x 480 (NTSC).

Thank you so much for the quick response!

In the case of this WMV file, the compression was set as low as possible. Furthermore, the frame rate and frame size were set to the DVD standard (29fps and 720x480).

Regarding the fact that the patches would not apply, I surmised that this was due to trial software, but mentioned it in case someone had information that the patched version would address the problem I was having.

So having said that, I will hold out hope that someone has been down this road and might have an idea for me. I have found Movie Factory to be the best choice of the apps I have reviewed, but I need to overcome this hurdle if possible.

Did you create this wmv file yourself? Can you list its properties here? I'm talking about the source file for the DVD MF slide show.

As I say, it was created by Photo Story 3 (PS3), but PS3 allows for optional "profiles" that dictate certain settings. This can be done either through a free Profile Editor that works with all types of WMV files, or by creating/editing the custom profile as a text file.

I used the Profile Editor to adjust the majority of the settings for a custom PS3 profile I "created" (a copy of an existing profile). As I was saying, I set the parameters as mentioned in the last post. But if you would like to see the custom profile itself I would be happy to send it to you. This of course is a text file proprietary to PS3, and, depending on your PS3 experience, this may or may not be what you are looking for.

I am not seeing an attachment button as I write this, but I can include the files contents in the body of the thread.

No, I don't need the profile because I don't use PS3.

If I were to make a slide show, I would use VS (or MSP 8 which I prefer) right from the start and create my slide show with the original, resized images.

In any case, I would not create a wmv file to author to DVD. It is a highly compressed file format, regardless of the settings you used, and needs to be re-rendered to DVD compatible mpeg2.

The quality reduction you see is due to the file having to be re-rendered.
