Problem with Mini Dvd on Video Studio

Post by RANGER94 »

Hi All,
I am very new to the camcorder world, any assistance, probably down to to idiot level would be appreciated. Based on recommendations of other forums, I downloaded Video Studeo, which as the forums all state, it is by far the easiest to use. I am having problems Importing my Mini DVD to the program. When I go to Capture, Import DVD, the program only shows the first 3 clips, out of 9 clips. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. My camcorder is the Sony DCR-DVD505.
I believe this is a software problem, because when I put the min DVD in both my desktop, and also laptop DVD players, Windows Media player opens and has all 9 clips. Due to the functionality of Video Studio, I would really like to stick with it, but I need to get all of my clips to work properly.

Thanks![/code]

Did you finalize your disk in the camera prior to loading it into the DVD drive?

Thanks for the quick response. Yes I finalized the disk in the camcorder. The mini DVD works perfectly in my desktop and my laptop. Also, I failed to mention that when I attempt to import the files from mini DVD to video studio, it shows all 9 chapters, but only the first three look OK in the preview. The last six chapters, when I attempt to preview them get stuck on the same scene, the last scene from the third chapter. When I say stuck, I mean it freezes to the last scene of the third chapter. So if I attempt to preview Chapter 7, it goes back to the last scene of chapter 3.

Again thanks so much for the quick response, I am trying to get this fixed ASAP. (My wife is pregnant with twin girls, and they are due the end of October - thus I am under a little pressure to get this fixed before they arrive)

At first glance, it sounds to me as though there might be a corruption on the disc or in that particular file. The fact that it plays back OK is no real indicator as players can be more forgiving than editors of small faults...

Have you tried transferring the contents of the DVD to your hard disc, and importing from there? A tried and pretty true fall back if that does not work is to then change the extension '.vob' on relevant files to '.mpg' and see if VS can read them.

Did any Sony software come with the camera? If so, can you import using that?

The Sony camcorder came with Picture Perfect, which I have not been able to get it to work. Video Studio has so far been of more success than Picture Perfect. I will give your recommendations a try. One quick question, what is difference between the .vob extension and MPEG. I think I know the MPEG part, but what is .VOB.

Thanks

.VOB is the extension used by video files on a DVD, and it is what I think you will find on your own mini DVD... In reality, though, it is an mpeg-2 which has been burned to DVD. That is why you can simply swap the extensions if nothing else works...

Though vobs are 1gb in size and can contain severl mpeg2 files if they have been split. This can result in only the first mpeg being editable, with the second and any subsequent ones not being seen.

It may pay to try using something like dvddecryptor to change the vobs to their seperate mpegs.

What type of miniDVD are you using? DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW. If it is DVD-RW, what is the format you choose (e.g. VR mode)? I once had issues with DVD+RW and VideoStudio and some cheap DVD-R that were getting corrupted 3 times out of 4. I am now using high quality DVD-RW formatted in VF mode and never had any issues since then.

I think I am doing something wrong. I clicked and dragged the VOB file from the minDVD into a new folder on my hard drive. When I attempt to open the VOB file on my hard drive with the media player, nothing happens. I am sure I screwed this one up. Does it need to go to a certain type of file on my hard drive?

Secondly, I cannot figure out how to save the VOB file as MPG. I go to the file on my hard drive, right click on it, and I cannot seem to find SAVE AS. I attempted to rename it, but that did not work.

Lastly, as for the DVD Decryptor, does Video Studio do that, or should I purchase another software program. Any recommendations?

Again, thanks for the help here. It is greatly appreciated.

dvd decryptor is it's own programme, google for it.
Do you have file extensions showing on the end of your file names? If so, edit the end of the vob to mpg or mpeg, if not, you need to set this first and then do it.

skier,
There are no file extensions on the end of the file names on my hard drive. I don't understand, you need to this first and then do it.

I think Graham means you have to enable Windows to show the file name extensions.

Go to Windows Explorer and click on Tools>Folder Options>View Tab and uncheck the Hide Extensions for Known File Types box.

Thanks Jeff.

I'll add, remember to check this box again afterwards or each time you change the name of a file you'll need to add the extension to the end.

As far as I am aware, if you are talking about using Windows Media Player with your VOB files, that will only work if WMP finds a codec on your computer it can use. It does not natively come with one. In my case, I have PowerDVD which has such a codec and I use PowerDVD to play such files. WinDVD 8 comes with the VS11 package and I understand that it too has the necessary codec.
