You can get a whole movie down to around 800 MB, how? I don't know because I don't work with video for the internet, sorry.

The file size is governed by the frame size, frame rate, duration and bit rate as well as the compression type. Mpeg4 gives the smallest file size, I believe.

The settings you have to use also depend on your source files.

I'd have thought that the best place to find the answer to that question is on the YouTube Help section. If you go there, it's number two in the top five FAQs: What's the best format to upload for high quality?

Apparently, the best format is:
* MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format
* 320x240 resolution
* MP3 audio
* 30 frames per second

From my limited use of YouTube, it seems their converter copes best with the widescreen flags in MPEG-4 based files. When I tried to upload a widescreen MPEG-2, everything ended up squashed into their 4:3 frame. You can, of course, letterbox the footage manually, but that means you're using some of your valuable 100MB file limit on the black bars.

Edit: You're limited to 10 minutes, too....

Just as a test, I took the standard Ulead sample videos (which are NTSC MPEG-2s) into a PAL DV timeline and encoded them into WMV 320 x 240 15 fps, which I then uploaded into YouTube. The wmv file was only 4.04 Mb for 3 min 33 sec, so, for 10 min, would be only 11.4 Mb, so that gives you a BIG margin to improve the quality. You can see the result at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgjDgZGMTyc
It's not perfect, but considering it has changed formats at least 3 times and is 15 fps, it's not bad.

I purchased Ulead's MPEG4 add-on for MSP8 just for my YouTube videos, and encode my videos at 320x240 for upload (I'm not at my editing station at the moment, but my settings are pretty close to their iPod preset at 320x240). This resolution is what YouTube recommends...

I've found that a 10 minute video will take up about 65 -70 megs in this MPEG4 format.

If you're curious about the quality, you can see some of this output at http://www.youtube.com/hollowaybaral. My earlier videos (anything uploaded before this summer) were encoded in either .MOV or .WMV format before uploading, but I switched to the MP4 plugin to try to get a little better quality. However, there's lots of action in a couple of the clips (like the mountain biking video) so the quality drops a bit in these.

I've been happy with the results so far - it was worth the small investment for the plugin.

I hope this helps,

Al

OK, I've done another WMV test at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBYogs9g7f0

This was some raw, unedited, DV footage (sorry about the sticky tripod and the first shot of the Salamis Gymnasium). It was encoded to WMV at 320 x 240, 25 fps at 100% quality. The 6 min 13 sec WMV file was 13.6 Mb, so 10 min would be ~22 Mb, still leaving ample space for tweaking to higher quality.

Do you recognise any of the shots?

Exceptional footage, to answer your question, no. If you enter any of that video into the competition, i resign. All I have to offer is death and destruction from New Orleans....

Sorry, I don't consider that footage exceptional: it came off the first tape I was able to lay my hands on, as is. I don't accept your resignation because:

1. All those shots were taken in the militarily occupied part of Cyprus while I live in the unoccupied Republic. They are therefore not "My Town".

2. I have not yet decided whether I'll get around to shooting anything locally.

3. If I did, there are no attractive antiquities within the municipal boundaries of where I live (except myself, of course)

4. In any case, I feel that, as moderator, with the possibility of a casting vote, it may be unethical for me to participate, even though Admin says that moderators can

5. If I do participate (big if), because of 4. I may declare my entry hors concours

6. If I enter and get zero votes, my amour propre will be deflated and I will appear to others to be a pretentious twit on these forums! :D

Hi Guys
I saw Asande's post and I bought the Ulead MPeg4 plug-in as well but I cannot find an audio setting for MP3. All I get is MPEG AAC Audio: 128 Kbps. Doesn't the ULead plug-in have MP3 or do I have to get another MPEG 4 plug-in (or doesn't it matter)???
Thanks & regards.

I've just been using the MPEG AAC: 128 audio - and YouTube doesn't seem to care one way or the other. I don't have any synch or other problems with it...
