Effect Question

Post by dabear »

While using msp 8.0

Hey everyone, I was watching a music video and seen something I would like to try out but I don't know what to call the effect so I couldn't check out the manual.

It's during this music video at 12-15secs With the video flashing in and out.

How do I go about this? Thanks

Are you referring to the speakers flashing in? If so that should be fairly simple.

That is just a number of images or video clips, having a duration of just a few frames. You would alternate the 2 different (or as many as you would like) images. I tried it, and managed to get close, setting the duration for the images at 2 frames.

In order to avoid messing with the audio, assuming your file is in V1, just put your 2-3 frame images on V2, leaving V1 intact. That will avoid risking synch loss.

The easiest way is to position your clips on V1 and V2 with an "overlap" that matches the duration of the flashing bit. Use the waveform view on the audio as a guideline for when the beats occur that coincide with the flashes. Then, place alternating solid black and solid white colour clips on V3 timed to the beat (ideally, start with black, but as you'll see below, it doesn't really matter).

Image

Set your preview range (as above) so that it covers just the colour clip range, then output as an AVI. Doesn't matter what sort - I used DV.

Hide the colour clip track (as I've done below) or just delete the colour clips. Clear the preview range and scissor the V2 clip at the end of the overlap. Select the overlapping part on V2

Image

Press {Ctrl} {R} to bring up the overlay options dialog and change Type to "Gray Key", Mask to "Video Matte" and the browse the associated filename to the one you created earlier. If you accidentally start the matte with white (as I did deliberately  ), just check the Invert overlay area box.

Gorf: This seems unnecessarily complicated. I tried this:

and it worked fine. You can see I synched the 3-frame images with the drum beat of the music.

I agree it's a bit involved, but the OP wanted flashing video, not stills.

Doesn't matter whether it's stills or video; the technique is the same.

I suppose it depends on your workflow - there are always different ways to arrive at the same end product. I'd prefer my method if it's important to maintain voice synch with the "singer", or anything else where the footage in both clips continues even when it's not the one being displayed.

Prithee, how can synch go wrong with my method?

Thanks Gorf for this nice tuteral. I am very lost at the moment

I got the video on v1 and v2 overlaped with colours exactly like your pic1.
But missing overlays like in your picture.

Im using Mpeg video files.
Now do i need to put on a Overlay on both videos because i Don't have the red overlay image on the videos in the track. So I did the Crtl R,Type to "Gray Key", Mask to "Video Matte" but don't have the video matte?
So i guess i never made one earlier. But the red overlay icon are on both now.

 :( ....lost

If you're just having one or two frames, just use Ron & Devil's method with stills.

The black and white colour clips in pic1 are there for convenience - it's easy to check they fit the beat and duration of your homemade transition. You use them to create a video matte, but when it's created, you delete them or disable the track.

I'll put together a tutorial later today (I'm stuck inside waiting for a mattress to be delivered  )

In the meantime, I'll have a hunt around for some music to work with...
