Video getting distorted

Post by gchan »

Hi

I use Canon xh a1 camera for video recording and VS11+ for editing.

One of my recent recording is acting weird.

When I play the tape and watch it on TV the video is good.

When I download it to my PC (1440 x 1080, 16:9, Upper Field First) occasionally I see video getting distorted like this for 1 to 2 secs and then back to normal.

Image

I used Non HD mini DV prof. tape which can record upto 83 mins.

Trying hard to figure out the problem. Any suggestion ?

I tried cleaning the head.

I use HP desktop,2 gb ram,amd athlon 64 x2 dual core processor 4600 +
Vista home premium, nvidia geforce 6150 graphic card

What are you using to download the video to your PC, USB or Firewire cable?

The only other thing I could think of is maybe the tape was not recorded correctly at the time due to dirty head(s) and/or fault in tape at the place where the problem occurs but you state that the tape plays ok when played straight to TV. It seems that the picture has pixelated and that has happened to me once or twice but I also have noticed that when it did occur the sound was also distorted such as a squealing noise as the pixelation occurred.
Have you noticed and strange noise at the time where the pixelation occurs?
It appears from your post that you are recording in high definition? is that true? I record in SD (720 X 576 PAL) which may not have problems which may occur in HD.
I can't offer any more help but maybe some of the more learned people who read these posts may have other suggestions.

If you get a squeal (audio) at the same time as the pixellation then I am almost sure it is due to dirt on the tape and/or heads as you downloaded that part of the tape.
As you state that it doesn't happen when viewing on a TV (I assume that you played the actual tape when viewing on the TV) then it seems that it may have been an intermittent problem which may NOT ever occur again (a loose piece of dirt/oxide floating around) I suggest that you either capture (download) the entire tape to PC again or just the scene with the problem. The problem may not occur again.

Unless you keep getting a repeat of the problem I would also suspect it may have been a faulty section of the tape itself.

I have a similar problem but it is off of a flash-media Sony HDR-CX7.

The problem ONLY appears when I view the HD video in Windows Mediaplayer. (1-2 sec of blocky video in the same location on the clip)

When I play the video in WinDVD 8 it is flawless. :D
(and of course it is flawless in VS 11 when I'm viewing the clip after I recode from AVCHD to HD-MPEG)

gchan, what are you using to view the video again?

Im using VS11 to view.

When i view the mpg file using windows media player, that portion gets skipped ( or jumped) by player.

Wierd..
I'm not sure why it would display fine on the TV but be glitched when VS11 plays the video. The pixelation I see is only post-VS11.
Sorry :(
