Video Formats Question

Folks,

I am having trouble figuring out which video output format to use to for my projects. I want to post some videos to web like youtube, I want to display a few videos on my home television and burn some on DVD

All my content is shot through a consumer camcorder (Canon DC50)

I have a widescreen tv and some of the avi videos I play appear stretched??

Is there a guide that can help me?
