Help! Lost capture files.

Post by Sue Whitham »

I have a project saved as a .VSP file. When opening, VS asks to relink all the files. They are not in the VS10 capture folder (or anywere else, including the Recycle bin). A full search has proved negative. I can't re-capture, as I've filmed over the DV tape. I have all the capture numbers of the .avi files in question. I think they must have been deleted in error. I assume that they must still be on the hard drive somewhere - has any one any idea how I can recover them?

Are you sure you couldn't find the files somewhere on your hard drive?because otherwise you are asking for the almost impossible.

Have you opened the project and have a look at the file names of the files on your timeline?

There are programs that will recover your files, just keep from writing files to your hard drive, here is a link to a search for programs that will recover your files. Some of them are free. http://search.netscape.com/search/searc ... e=net-home

Have you looked in the "My Documents" folder, Ulead Videostudio subfolder?

If you still have the thumbnails in your library for the missing files try Right clicking over them and choose 'Properties' - you should then see the path to the folder that videostudio thinks that the missing videos are in - check in there first.

The thumbnail should also be labelled with the name od the captured file (something like 'uvs070820-001') trying doing a search of your computer for the file name.

If the thumbnails are not there take the name of the file from the Relink error message and do a windows search of your computer for that

Many people make the mistake in believing that the vsp file is their new video  . Well, it ain't. It's only a text file telling VS where the source clips are and what you did to them. The originals are not altered by your editing actions.

If you open a project file (vsp) and VS cannot find the source files, well, it cannot recreate your actions because the source files are not where VS expects to find them.

You may have moved them or, worse, deleted them. If you only moved them or renamed the folder these files were stored in, point VS to the new location folder and select relink when VS displays it's mesage, voila.

If you inadvertently deleted them from your system, bad luck. You may be able to recover some using any of the gadgets suggested in earlier posts but if you have used your PC since you deleted them, they may be irretrievably lost. That's one of the reasons why I will never tape over any of my source tapes. I keep them as a back-up. Tapes are relatively cheap these days and by far the most cost effective backup for DV-AVI apart from a dedicated HDD to archive full resolution DV-AVI (~13 GB/hour of video)

Thanks for suggestions

Thanks everyone - but yes, I have tried all these things. I'm familiar with re-linking files, and usually have no problem. I don't have the thumbnails in the library, but I do have the file names (numbers) from the re-link message. I'll try some of the recovery software suggested. I'm usually so careful about back-up, but then I'm only human too.

sure you tried this

I am sure you tried this on your search. Try a wild card search *.avi , and/or try a wild card search with out the .avi possibly it could be a diffrent format.

Wild card search

Post by Sue Whitham »

I had tried a search with .avi, but not a wild card search * without the .avi. That was a good idea, but unfortunately, still yielded no result. Thanks anyway.

Sue . . .

Did you try looking in "My Documents" like I suggested? With Windows Explorer, not the search feature?

I don't know why, but when I use the search feature (suggested above) it won't search the "My Documents" folder. When I just tried the search feature specifically searching the "My Documents" folder, nothing came back. BUT, when I go and look manually with WE there are the files I captured. Yes, I had the "Include Subfolders" checked on the searches.

I can't explain it why nothing shows in the search results, yet the files are there. I'm using VS 10+.

Good luck,

File search - windows explorer

Post by Sue Whitham »

Thanks LGO - yet another idea to try, but still no luck. I've also now tried some recovery software, and though one programme has identified the files deep in the C drive, it hasn't been able to restore them.
I think I'll have to put this one down to experience.

I feared that right from the start, sorry. It was worth a try though.
