DVD vs. DV capture

Post by froggy_doddy21 »

I have always used DV to capture my video from my digital camcorder (from Mini DV). My final output is always to DVD.

Would there be any difference in FINAL VIDEO QUALITY (ON DVD) if I captured my video in DVD format instead of DV (ie. transfer footage to Ulead in mpeg2 instead of avi). I figure it will save me covertion time as well as hard drive space.

I think that since the final product is DVD (bitrate 8000) that if I capture in in "DVD" format to begin with then it should be just as good as DV (in picture quality).

Am I right?

"Am I right?"

Yes and no.

Depends as always on what you are going to do with the footage.

Edit it? Stick with dv.
Just burn a dvd, capture as mpeg - so long as your pc can cope with real time dv-mpeg conversion, otheriwse you'll get dropped frames etc.

I am planning on edit it.

That's exactly why I thought I'd ask. I have a good, fast PC but it sounds like I should stick with DV.

Thanks for the fast reply.

DVD vs DV

I dump my DV to my JVC recorder and the final product is a DVD(VOBs.) Then, I edit with VideoRedo(a excellent editor) and burn with TDA 3. Fast and great results.
