Well I finally got it all :)

I think Ulead has some excellent products, but they may want to invest more into support...

Ok mbt, how did you do it?

try downloading at night, there's less traffic.

As far as I can tell, Ulead wasn't ready for the influx of traffic from releasing both VS9 and MF4 within a month of eachother. The site gets clogged during the dya, but you cna typically get pretty quick access at night.

smart download PLUS!

Post by ant.scott »

Hi! I have been looking at this thread, (smart download), I haven.t been able to get anything down and got a message that access to the FTP server was denied. AN AWFUL LOT OF THE STUFF YOU CLICK ON IN THE VARIOUS PALLETTES AND GALLERIES IS ONLY AVAILABLE IF YOU DOWNLOAD IT. A more pressing problem is: I downloaded PI10 (full) although I was running PIXL I don't realyy trust ULEAD, so I decided a clean sweep was called for. Working my way through the tutorials, I tried to open a new document (printer portrait>standard.1280 x1024 pixels) just to play around with the interface. "THE PROGRAM HAS ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO CLOSE" and the whole thing crashes. I am beginning to think I've made a mistake. I downloaded the full version using download manager and a back-up CD is in the post, but I.m not very happy. Has anyone got any ideas? I agree with some of the views expressed, Ulead's web site sux and support is non-existant. :x :x :x :x
Apprentice idiot, but I'm getting there!

As for Smartdownload, from what I've gathered through tech support calls and the like, here is the deal with that.

Back in an old version of PI (6 I think, not sure) they had the good idea of breaking up the download so that narrowband users didn't have to download it all at once. TO make this simpler, they created an auto-download program called "smart download" which they have continued using to this day.

THen the problem comes. WIth the ever growing security risks on the internet, new security protocol's mean the port which smartdownload accesses is now default to close instead of open, rendering the smartdownload obsolete. In response they put everything up on the website, which causes a ton of congestion. They need to get a bigger server.

Video Studio 9 has a new version of Smart Download which bypasses the problem, so I think the next version of Photo Impact will solve this problem. I don't know if they're going to patch 10 or not.

As for your second problem, I haven't encountered anything like that. I'd suggest trying (if you haven't already) reinstalling it, and see how that affects things. Often a problem like that can be caused by a glitch during the install (installing in diagnostic mode helps prevent that kinda stuff too)

As for their tech support/website, other than them being a bit overtaxed right now, they're no worse than anybody else out there.

I strongly disagree... An autoresponder with a tracking number would be appropriate. I sent an email to tech support and get the feeling it was routed to a black hole.

I just bought this program because I really like the trial, got the full download and can't even use A LOT of the feature because of the *brilliant* idea of "smart download".

If a port is being blocked then if someone could tell me the port number I would appreciate it; at least unblock it myself.

Jerz,

I agree Smart download is a curse, but I think you're having problems with the Trial or Download Vs the Full version of PI 10.

What I mean is the trial and Download don"t have all of the Galleries and Libraries, and other stuff that can be found in the Full.

I would suggest waiting for the Full Disc, coming in the Post, and then uninstall the trial or Download Version you have and install the Full.

If you navigate to the Full version you will find in the Folder Ulead.Dat the files you are now trying to Download. YOU Don't need to download with the Full, at least not the Full Version I have.

Even for downloading Patches, I never use Smart Download, always get the file and save to disc, and install later. That way I always have a copy if I ever have to uninstall PI 10 and reinstall, which is like Microsfot XP about once every three months.

Well, that's my 2 cents worth.

Actually I had the trial of Ulead Gif animator and purchased Photo Impact 10 because it came with gif animator. I never had the PI trial software installed. I didn't order the CD because I never had a problem with dowloads from other companies and just ordered the dowload which I downloaded promptly. I installed Pi10_full_e.exe first and followed with the rest of the software that I downloaded from the site. By downloading the full version instead of ordering the cd I actually expected the full version but evidently that's not the case. The very least ulead could do is let you know that all of the plugins are not included on the full download but are included on the cd.

I emailed tech support last week... no response, I emailed customer service today... no response, however they did send an email saying thay charged my credit card. My next and only line of defense IMHO is to tell my credit card company to deny payment since I paid for something and ulead failed to deliver. I really don't have time to keep bothering with the smart download. As far as I'm concerned... if the download isn't the same as what's on the cd then don't offer it as an option.

Here's a screenshot of the results I continuously get with "smart download". It's like it *thinks* that it's downloading the files but nothing is there:

Ok, here's another update and providing everything download properly; I'll be happy with the product...

Anyway, I called tech support tonight and didn't wait long and got the answer I was looking for... it appears "smart download" no longer works so you just need to download the components here:

Cheers!

Here's to a great product...

This link should take care of your problem, just download and install all the
files and then see if the smart download file list goes empty,if it does go empty and no files are listed you know you have all the updates.

Aren't the majority of the downloads now incorporated into the PI10 install exe?
That's what it says on the PI10 downloads page.
