OK, I'm an idiot. I admit it. Here goes:

VideoStudio SE v10 with a Syntek STK1150 USB capture device. The capture via composite @ NTSC seems to be fine. In fact, the .avi file I create plays in Windows Media Player (in Vista).

And in fact at the completion of the capture, the video seems to insert into the timeline successfully. But if I leave VS and then try to File/Insert MediaFile to Timeline/Insert Video, I'm told the file is unreadable.

So, when you stop laughing, will you please tell me what I'm doing wrong and how to insert a captured .avi into the timeline for editing?

Thanks
Scott

The SE part of your VideoStudio 10 stands for "Simple Edition" - one that is normally provided with an item of hardware such as a camcorder, camera or TV card. It is not a 'Full Version' of VideoStudio.

VS10 was written before Vista was released and requires an update patch which is found on the Ulead Website. I am currently at a location that cannot access the Ulead site http://www.ulead.com/tech/vs/vs_ftp.htm
The site will tell you if the patch can be applied to SE versions.

Thanks for the hint. The web site says "This Update Pack is for Ulead® VideoStudio® 10/10 Plus (BOX, ESD, UPG, and activated TBYB) version."

Does the failure to mention "SE" mean that it won't work for me?

Most probably.
You can give it a try but if it comes back with a "failed to find" type message you will need to upgrade.

Syntek STK1150 USB capture device
Did that device come with any other capture software? It's usually best to use the capture software that's specially designed to work with the hardware. (Video Studio may have been bundled with the hardware too, so you can use it for editing and/or making DVDs.)
... (in Vista).
It's not clear to me if the Vista update can be applied to VS10SE. You'll have to try it.

Sometimes a "bad" file will play OK, but cause trouble when you try to edit or convert it.

What are the AVI file details/properties? AVI is a "container" format and it can contain audio/video in almost any format. The highly-compressed MPEG-4 variations seem to cause lots of trouble. AVI/DV (13GB per hour) is nearly trouble-free, but USB-2 is not quite fast enough for real-time DV.

Let's see...

The Syntek STK1150 didn't come with any drivers or software. But it does seem to capture OK.

I tried the Vista upgrade. No luck.

I captured using the Format "AVI." The capture settings say the compression is YUY2, the frame size is 16 bits, 720x480, 29.97fps, and it's a Microsoft AVI file.

Would I have better luck trying a different format? MPEG or WMV?

Thanks.
